Some good marks (and races, from the looks of it) from Friday night:

Chris Derrick 13:44.02 5000. Should move him up pretty high on the US junior list. No FAST Annual at hand, so off the top of my head, ahead of him are Rupp (13:37 AJR, HSR) and Franklin Sanchez (13:38) with Lindgren (13:44.0) about the same. The kid doesn't even turn 19 until October. He's one for the future! Will be interested to see if he runs a 10K this year. I think he could challenge Rupp's 28:15 AJR.

    Good DMRs on both sides:

    1 Washington 'A' 11:05.80A
    1) 676 Babcock, Christine 2) 674 Ankton, Falesha
    3) 681 Campbell, Kailey 4) 688 Follett, Katie

    1) 468 Follmar, Alicia 2) 482 Otu, Idara
    3) 473 Lattanzi, Maria 4) 462 Centrowitz, Lauren

    1 Arkansas 'A' 9:28.35!
    1) 21 Ulrey, Dorian 2) 8 Bilbrew, Chris
    3) 12 McClary, Alex 4) 13 McClary, Andy

Prefontaine held the outdoor US 5000 m (~13:39) record prior to Sanchez.

Lindgren may have had a 3-mile mark around 13:04 as a junior. For 6-miles, he ran 27:11.

What is the indoor US best for a junior in the 5000 on an acceptable size track?

Looks like that Arkie relay time is #3 all time indoors.

        Oversized track, I believe.

This little nugget of info comes from the official UCLA site's recap of the UW invite:

Another event winner for the Bruins was sophomore Jonathan Clark who won the triple jump with a leap of 59-4.75. He was just 4 centimeters shy of a provisional qualifier.
That is one heckuvva qualifying mark that the NCAA has set! He's the #2 performer in history, breaks the American record and still doesn't get a provisional...

Where does Jen Barringer's 8:53 stand on the all time College list?

Very impressive performance in the men's heptathlon from Ashton Eaton (someone I'd never even heard of until now). His 6174 (albeit on an oversized track; not that it would make much difference in a hep) puts him in the top 25 on the world all time list and is the sixth best ever by an American. Not bad for someone who just turned 21 a few days ago.

We had great fun cheering Eaton on the the Olympic Trials-he was a crowd favourite as he is from the Eugene area. He finished 5th.

A certain young decathlete I coach would love to meet and compete against this guy.

Ashton is very quick but his throws are weak. Once he gains some strength and technique in these events he will definitely be a contender for the 2012 Olympic team.

Tony Young, age 46, ran a 4:13 mile yesterday. But he won't get credit for a world indoor record in his age group because of the oversized (307m) track.

Looking at his stats, you're absolutely right. He has a great range (10.57 for 100m, 46.74 for 400m and 4:20.56 for 1500m) and his jumps are also very solid (2.09m for HJ, 5.10m for PV, 7.68m/-2.8m/s for LJ), but that 12.79m PB for the shot sticks out like a sore thumb. When he is so good at the other events, would he risk getting slower if he concentrated a bit more on his throws? How would Mr Mojo improve Eaton's throws without compromising his speed and endurance?

Eaton needs to gain some upper body strength which he will do as he is now in the age bracket where strentgh gain (between 20-24) is greatest but his technique in all 3 throws is very raw. It looks as if he has just starting throwing -which is more than likely the case.

So if mr mojo coached him they would be definitely trying to get the basics down in the throws (Eaton threw the shot like a girl at the Trials!) and hit the weights. I am sure his coach is doing those things with him so hopefully he will show great improvment in those events this year.

None of the above would in any way take away from his speed.

Our just turned 20 year decathlete is regularly throwing around 48-50m with the discus and 13m in the shot. (In very cold weather I might add).

if only he could PV like Eaton!

(Eaton onlyhigh jumped 1.99 I think I at the trials and his high jump looked rough there. 2.09 is great!)

Wanted to add that Eaton is a huge prospect because he has SPEED and he can jump. The other stuff can all be developed but without speed (which is almost impossible to create in a person) it is a very uphill climb.

The Us has some good decathletes coming down the pike.

                            Canada has a couple too...I hope, I think. 8-)

He is similar to Joe Detmer (Wisconsin), although Joe was more unheralded (no scholarship until is junior year) and he then placed 4th indoors with a 2:29i WB and 10.8, 47, 4:04 marks, if I recall correctly. He said that if he had picked it up earlier he might have broken 4:00 in the 1500 and jumped up to second at NCAAs with all the net points gained in that 1500.
