  • Florida and the Collegiate 4x1 record?

Has there ever been a school head into a season with four sub10.20 sprinters before? I know TCU didn't have that kind of speed when they set the NCAA record. If...

    Terrell Wilks...10.19
    Jeremy Hall...10.17
    Willie Perry...10.12
    Jeff Demps...10.01

....can stay healthy. Yes I know the 4x1 is not the 100m but it does take speed and nobody has more of it than the Gators.

Demps already had groin surgery and will miss the indoor season; I wouldn't hold out high hopes for his being a major force this year.

He wouldn't need to be a major force with that supporting cast. It's a long time until June.

And then there's the Harvins, Raineys and Jameses!!! If anyone thinks those guys couldn't help a 4x1, they're crazy (or Texas)!

Rainey might run some track. Check out Gator speed...

          Stanley Harris
          Dennis Mitchell
          John Capel
          Bernard Williams
          Aaron Armstrong
          Daymon Carroll

....to go with those mentioned above

I don't know about four sub-10.20 sprinters, but the 2002 Volunteers and the 2000 Gators may have had faster cumulative foot-speed. This thread makes me wonder what could have happened to the 4x100 record had X-man stayed at LSU for four years. They no doubt would have run sub-38 with X-man replacing Armanti Hayes in last years' quartet..

Rainey's best is 10.66. 10.43 from high school was wind aided.
James is not on this year's roster. In 2007 he ran 10.87 at the SEC Champs

Harvin DNS at 2007 SEC Champs. 10.69 PB as high school senior. 10.43 from high school was wind aided.

Possibly they could contribute in a relay capacity.

Clemson had a pretty studly group of 100m runners last year

Travis Padget 10.00 entering last year
                Jacoby Ford 10.23
                Corey Brown 10.37
                CJ Spiller 10.41

I impatiently await the debut of Dix (who still trains there). I keep hearing amazing things from Tally. A rebuilt start, higher top-end, more endurance. The mind boggles.

Dix has always looked a little heavy to me. I wonder what he could do if he shed a few pounds.

                        Can you imagine LSU relay

                        Trinidon Holiday
                        Xavier Carter
                        Gab Mvumvure
                        Richard Thompson

                        That would be 37.8x territory.

Florida should run very well, I doubt they approach the record simply due to lack of discpline on the relay. As talented as they are (and they probably will win), I just dont see them being as dicplined on handoffs as an LSU or TCU team.

Florida State will be right ther with Florida though.

Had X-man stayed at LSU for four years, not only would you have had a 10.0 sprinter replacing a 21.2 quartermiler, but here's what else would have happened:
                          • 1) FSU's three-peat would have just been a one-peat.
                            2) LSU would have won the three more NCAA titles (one indoor, two outdoor).
                            3) Walter Dix would have fewer NCAA individual titles on his resume.
                            4) The 4x100 record would have been put on the shelf for a loonnngggg time.
Of course the folks in Gainesville might make similar claims about what could have been had John Capel stayed in school for four years.

Even if Capel had stuck around, I doubt they would have broken that record. Florida has never had the discpline to break that record, similiar to the 4x4. They obviously had the talent, but the discipline of uniform and clean handoffs isnt somthing that talent can just over come.

Without Perry I don't see a record chase as a reality. What happened?
