The series of heights jumped by Friedrich demonstrates a lot of confidence. She had five jumps before eventually failing three times at 2.07m, Vlasic had nine. That's a huge difference and for Vlasic to break though to clearances at 2.07m+ heights, I think she needs to do something similar (especially as it appears she's still going to compete a lot).

She admitted not being fit enough after too many meetings in the last weeks and she looks forward to some rest . Does anybody really know why she's competing too much against her better judgement? Does she really need the money?
Friedrich was utterly stunning because her 2.05 was a perfect clearance. I guess she progressed so agressively from 1.90 to 2.00 in order to put Vlasic under pressure. It's very difficult to beat Vlasic via height so the attempts could play a major role in Turin and Berlin.

        Very impressive jumping by Friedrich.

And the italians are shaping up well against Torino. Cusma in the 800m and three Italians ran well in the 60m with Cerutti winning at 6,59 ( and Collio not even present)!

Question for bigger stat-geeks than me...

Is this the first time that two athletes have cleared 2.05m at their first attempts in the same competition?

Yes. There have only been two competitions in history in which the top two have cleared 2.05m. Beijing was one of them (in which Vlasic cleared 2.05m on her second attempt). Karlsruhe last weekend was the other. Blanka Vlasic has the unfortunate honour of being the athlete who finished second on both occasions.

And on the theme of being an unlucky high jumper, Vlasic also co-holds the honour of having the best jump not to be good enough for a medal at a major championships - her 2.01m in Gothenburg was only good enough for fourth place. (Slesarenko also jumped 2.01m in Beijing to finish fourth).
