  • NCAA track facilities

Was over at the Ole Miss site looking over hoops stuff and clicked on pictures of their track facility. It looks beautiful. I would take it over ours in a second.

Here is Miss. State's facility. Not much to write home about here.

I will post links to facilities here from time to time unless a mod would rather me not do so:

      The rest of the SEC...

From what I can tell, it looks like Arkansas has the best facility in the league. Then, either LSU or Ole Miss. I'd put Tennesseee and Florida next. Then Alabama, followed by Georgia. S. Carolina, Kentucky, Miss. State, Auburn, Vandy all tie for last place.

Among the indoor facilities capable of handling NCAA meets, Arkansas' is tops, Kentucky 2nd, LSU 3rd and UF 4th. I don't think any other SEC school has an indoor 200 M track.

South Carolina has an indoor track, I don't know what size it is. I would rank UF ahead of LSU for indoors.

I'm not familiar with either in terms of field setup or stands, but UF's indoor track always had the reputation as one of the fastest 200m flat tracks in the country. In fact, Florida's Last Chance meet used to be a desired destination for fast times before the proliferation of banked and oversized facilities.

The S. Carolina website says they have a four-lane track, but I don't think it is 200 M or meets the requirements to host NCAA championship meets. They've been in the SEC since '91 and I don't recall them ever having hosted a league meet. Tennessee has an indoor track too, but it's 1/5 mile.

Florida has a strange set up for indoor track. The track is half-way up the stands. They push in retractable seating to expose the track. I think the track is more round than oval, so it is fast. But I don't think the sightlines are good unless you are watching the opposite side of the track. This is why I ranked LSU ahead of Florida. Spectator friendliness is a factor here. Even gh said he wasn't sure about the new Texas A&M facility since they have LJ and PV runways in front of the track. But I'm sure the UF track is faster than LSU. I don't know where they have the jumps or throws at UF.

Ark, KY, and FL are the only schools that host the SEC indoor Champs. LSU facility has too tight of turns, and their own athletes seldom run 200, 400, or 4x4 at home meets.
FL has shot, lj, tj, pv on basketball court (raised runways) which is on a level lower than the track. HJ is contested on the track before running events, and weight throw is held outdoors.
Ole MIss hosted SEC the first year they got their new track

Thanks, Bruce. Not surprised you had the low down on SEC track facilities.

What do you think about the Ole Miss facility? Is it not beautiful or what? Mississippi is a poor freaking state. #50 easily. But they have this great facility. It brings much honor to our sport. These guys deserve some credit, for crying out loud.

They remove the basketball court first!

The A&M facility has the entire sprint straight, not the jumps runways, between the stands and the oval.

A&M's PV runway is beside the grandstand outside of the trackThe LJ/TJ are outside the track between the straight away and the grand stand.

I think the infield is Fieldturf so no DT, HT, or JT allowed. Plus, there's a big elevated box (for the announcer I assume) that blocks the view of the back straightaway for those sitting right at the finish line.

Another pic of the UF track at the O-Dome showing field events.

Thanks for the correction on the A&M track.

We ought to do a ranking of the t&f facilites in some of the other conferences as well - by whoever has seen them all in a conference.

Ole Miss has a great facility. I worked the SEC there several years ago. My first impression was that the outside NW horizontal jump pit ended awfully close to the fence but they assured me it accomodated Savante. Good enuff for me.

                              Pac 10 tracks

The Pac 10 pages do not have the pictures of their stadiums like we have in the SEC. Hard to tell from these pics what many of the stadiums look like. Most of these pictures are simply shots of the track from the stands. Going out on a limb here and guess that Oregon's is the best in that league. :P Edit: Better link to Drake Stadium at UCLA.
