  • Kim Smith to No.4 all-time in the 5000

    an e-mail I just got

    At today's NYU FastTrack:
Kim Smith 14:39.89 4 a-t behind 3 Ethiopians (Defar, Dibaba, Adere)

    Not bad

I hope she focuses on the track instead of trying for the marathon because she's got so much promise between 1500m and 10000m and there's no rush to do longer races yet.

Just for clarity, NYU Fastrack was the name of the meet. It was held at the Armory, which is not part of NYU.

Re: Kim Smith to No.4 all-time in the 5000

Kim Smith has a real knack for running indoors. She ran 14:50 indoors at BU three years ago which was then the fifth fastest performance/fourth fastest performer at the time. But the big deal about that race (if I remember correctly) was she ran the entire race solo! No rabbits, and second place was a minute or two back.

Didn't Kim have a 9:13 two mile in Boston / Reebok / Indoors two years ago?

Yes, she followed Defar home underneath The Cheat's world record. As the poster above said, she has a real ability to run indoors and when she ran 14:50 in Boston a few yrs ago, I don't think she had run inside 15-mins outdoors!

                Her PR's:
                http://www.iaaf.org/athletes/biographie ... index.html

                Outdoor

                1500 Metres 4:11.25 Waltham, MA 26/06/2004
                2000 Metres 5:47.10 Hamilton, NZL 13/01/2007
                3000 Metres 8:35.31 Monaco 25/07/2007
                5000 Metres 14:45.93 Roma 11/07/2008
                10,000 Metres 30:35.54 Palo Alto, CA 04/05/2008
                10 Kilometres 32:18 New York 09/06/2007

                Indoor
One Mile 4:24.14 Boston (BU), MA 08/02/2008
                3000 Metres 8:38.14 Boston (Roxbury), MA 27/01/2007
Two Miles 9:13.94 Boston (Roxbury), MA 26/01/2008
                5000 Metres 14:39 NYC

So her Indoor Mile is superior to her outdoor 1500 PR (though the 1500 is a little dated, from 2004). Her 3000m PRs are pretty similar with outdoor getting the nod (does the indoor 2M convert to a faster 3000m?). And her 5000m race today surpassed her 14:45 outdoor PR from last year...

Anyone have more details on the race? Splits? Whether or not she had anyone running with her for any part of the race? The results ed gee posted suggest a solo performance, but I would be interested to know if anyone ran with her for any part of the race. Also, I assume she must have spent a good bit of the race lapping runners. It's a great performance in any case, but if it was totally a solo effort, and if she spent much time lapping runners, then it seems she's prepared right now to go quite a bit faster.

I was at the Armory today, and my story is linked to the front page of TrackShark.com and includes the splits.

as a major fan of defar, and the etrhiopian girls, if these allegations are true, i will be a very heartbroken fan, if you can back up these allegations please do though, if you really dont have any basis for this allegation, then why the bitterness towards meseret defar?????????????

Ummm, doug? I don't think nevets is referring to Defar somehow!

I think you may get a clue as to whom he's talking about from looking at the indoor marks on the all time list linked above.

Edit: I was completely wrong! ops: I'd forgotten that Ms Jacobs had held the record, although she did that when I was paying much less attention to international athletics.

Btw, fantastic running from Kim Smith. I love her; she's a gutsy runner, always my favourite kind.

I could be wrong, but I think the reference was definitely not to Defar, but rather to R. Jacobs.
