Perhaps one of the historically-statistically minded readers could put Fernandez =CR performance in this historical context: How unusual is it for a freshman (moreover, a freshman who has not been redshirted, etc.) to set or equal a CR (indoor or out, men or women)? Perhaps it happens all the time, but I don't know this history of collegiate records. Can anyone comment on this? Thanks!

Yes, recall that when Steve Scott ran 3:51.11 in '79 he was considered equal AR-holder w/ Ryun's 3:51.1.

Fernandez ran that 3:55.02 solo from the first step out of 7th position in a double waterfall stagger and would undoubtably have broken the record had he had any company. HIs 4:06 in prelims Friday night was about as effortless as a 4:06 can be.
I was talking with Dave Smith, OSU coach, after the race and met Fernandez for the first time. Remarkedly mature and polite young man. Smith said the injury was "plantar fascias"(sp?), temporarily painful but not serious. Fernandez was already iced and up and walking by the time Smith got to the treatment tent after hearing Fernandez went down.
He has not decided whether Fernandez will run NCAA, World XC or both. He is not overly concerned about the scheduling and the double Sat nite was testimony to his durability.
Smith also chuckled over all the speculation and advice about Fernandez career that comes over this board.

I hope he runs NCAA indoor. Selfishly. Since I'm making the trip.

Not that they ever really emphasized indoors, but Colorado's men's distance program seems a bit kaput. Goucher, Torres, Torres, Ritz, Slattery, Schoolmeester, Nelson, Vaughn, Pifer (I've probaly left a couple out)...right now just about nada.
