  • Distance double: Jorgensen takes Big Ten title in 5,000

While there were a number of great performances in various conferences, one that might not get the note that it deserves is the double by Jorgensen to take Big Ten titles in the 3000 and 5000: 9:13

"She took the lead at the 2,000-meter mark and made the field follow her pace over much of the final 3,000 meters, but it required an all-out sprint down the homestretch for Jorgensen to hold off Iowa’s Racheal Marchand. She finished in 15:55.70." Leading the last 3000m to run 15:55 indoors (after a not-too-fast opening 2000) is a pretty good feat even if not on par with Jenny's 15:01.

    1 273 Jorgensen, Gwen Wisconsin 15:55.63! 10
    2 70 Marchand, Racheal Iowa 16:18.23 15:55.70! 8
    3 204 Franek, Bridget Penn State 16:03.40 15:58.76$ 6
    4 4 Bizzarri, Angela Illinois 16:07.50$ 5

In the 3000 she had to hold off two athletes that have gotten decent press:

    1 273 Jorgensen, Gwen Wisconsin 9:10.12 9:20.42* 10
    2 4 Bizzarri, Angela Illinois 9:11.62 9:20.77* 8
    3 204 Franek, Bridget Penn State 9:10.04 9:21.93* 6

The unusual element is that this is Gwen's second indoor season of track (has had two outdoors) and she only had a year or so of HS track and was a swimmer at UW for several years (hence a Senior by eligibility). Only now has she shed most of her upper-body muscle/weight. (She was also one of the few bright spots on what was a pretty mediocre Big Ten meet for Wisconsin - the highlight for UW in the Men's meet was probably the 1-2 in the LJ! whereas last year they scored a bazillion points in the 600/800/1500/3000/5000/DistM -- about 100.)

Also, there were decent marks in the Pent: the first to are very good seniors, but Akinniyi is a freshman who can likely improve substantially in technical and strength aspects of the multis

Finals (auto 4050, first mark is entry mark)
    1 107 Wade, Bettie Michigan 4195 4216! 10
    2 207 Hunter, Gayle Penn State 4236 4165$ 8
    3 252 Akinniyi, Dorcas Wisconsin 3784 3998* 6
