  • Euro Indoor: womens 800m 3 rounds !!!

here in turin there were precicely 14 competitors in the womens 800m yet we still have 3 rounds. 2 people were eliminatled today.like we couldn't have had 2 semi's with 7 people each

i'm worried about the seeding for the semi's i can see 2 russian 2 gbr and petyluk in one semi and cusma picconi all by herself inthe other !!
    i deserve extra credit

What are they supposed to do though ? If you keep the 3 rounds people are going to complain about the unnecessary "additional" round when in fact the modus has been set and known for a while. You can't blame the EAA for the lack of participants.

Let's say they would have changed the modus a day or two before the first round, wouldn't that be unfair to those who prepared for three rounds, mentally, physically and from a logistic standpoint ?

    It's a loss-loss situation.

How convenient. The Men' 400m semi were similar yesterday with 3 heat winners in the firt one then the Italian all by himself in the 2nd.

Your mental approach going into the event is different, the training is probably not.

              trivial concern

i've never heard of anyone preferring 3 rounds to 2

They don't. Apparently Maz wasn't very happy at all. It' ridiculous.

Either contact the federations and ask for some more entrants or cancel a round. It's not that difficult.

the six top-seeded proceed to the final as expected. No casualties in the semis.

Regardless of how many rounds there were, this is going to be a cracker of a final!

                    Petlyuk
                    Meadows
                    Okoro
                    Savinova
                    Cusma-Piccione
                    Zbrozhek

As Steve Cram just said, any of these can win a medal; it's wide open.

I can't understand what made Okoro employ those tactics. The dog on the street could've seen that she'd blow up at some stage. She made it too easy for Savinova.

                        1 1205 Savinova, Mariya RUS 1:58.10 WL
                        2 1215 Zbrozhek, Oksana RUS 1:59.20 SB
                        3 1123 Cusma Piccione, Elisa ITA 2:00.23
                        4 1077 Meadows, Jennifer GBR 2:00.42
                        5 1078 Okoro, Marilyn GBR 2:03.30
                        6 1249 Petlyuk, Tetyana UKR 2:03.77

Pretty good rabbiting by Okoro. Pity she forgot it wasn't Jelimo behind her and went out a bit too hard.

For those who didn't see it, Okoro went through 400m in 56.x and in the end literally crawled across the finish line although she did fall over trying to out lean Cusma for the bronze medal. Full marks for her because if she wants to compete against Jelimo for the honours in the summer, she's got to get used to going out in 56 or 57 seconds for the 1st 400m.

Charles van Commenee was most definitely not impressed though. He called her naive and that it wasn't professional to go out too fast like that. Ouch!

I'm seriously impressed that she recovered from that lactic overload to come back and run in the 4x4!!!!

This has been quite the season by Savinova (23 years old). Coming into this indoor season, she had an outdoor best of 2:00.78 ('07) though indoors was faster: 1:59:46 ('08). The 1:58.10 is almost a 1.5 sec improvement.

Up until this season, she had never made the final of a world or euro championship.
