Anyone going to argue against a guy with recent 13:18 and 3:57 credentials?

The answer had better be yes; let's see who in the field will speak up...

How about the guy with 13:19 credentials? I realize that Rupp is 2-0 against Chelanga this year (including XC), but certainly he's the obvious choice as spoiler for attempt at Rupp's first track championship.

Or how about a guy who can kick like hell off a slower pace? I don't see why people would automatically tag Rupp as the winner......this is a championship race; how many times we see the guy who has the best PR not be the guy who has sufficient acceleration on the last lap or two to win. I think Rupp has to be really cranking the pace with 3 or 4 laps to go......if there's a pack at the bell I can't see him winning.

Rupp is in the position of needing to double well if Oregon is to win the team title. This is the first of his two races, and he'll want as much left in the tank as possible for the 3K.

On the other hand, Chelanga is soloing with this race. If Chelanga were to take it really hard from the start, I could imagine Rupp laying back and helping his teammates--Shadrack Biwott, Luke Puskedra, Scott Wall--go for maximum team points. Rupp could still take 8 points while conceivably running 20 seconds slower than Chelanga.

Also running the 5k/3k double are Biwott (Or), Shawn Forrest (Ark) and Chris Derrick (Stan). The rest of the field is soloing.

                      Impressive closing splits for Rupp:

28.86, 56.98 (!), 1:55.28, 2:29.40 (kilo), 3:03.22, 4:06.41. Seems like running those 800s and miles indoors have paid off. The 3000 tomorrow should be exciting! (Too bad ESPN won't allow some ISPs to access their feed).
