  • GT vs. UGA Dual Meet Thursday 4/2

For the first time since I've been associated with the program Georgia Tech and Georgia will face off in a T&F dual meet. So the last dual between these two programs was some time in the late eighties/early nineties. Folks just predating me at Tech told funny Coach Fowlkes stories about motivating the team and individuals for the meet. I'll be out there. Should be fun. Link to the schedule is below.

I was a student in Buddy Fowlkes physcial education class in 1955 - 1956. He had the ability to make the class fun. I didn't know anything about sprinting then.

Six years later I had begun subscribing to T&FN, so I was glad to read about his setting age-group 100 yard dash records for men in their late 30s. I wasn't surprised when he became the head coach at Georgia Tech with athletes such as Antonio McKay. He was a winner at anything that he did.

Not only do we have a dual meet between rival schools, but someone decided to schedule it when it wouldn't get buried in all the other weekend sports news. If it was on regional cable TV then college T&F could claim it was only 20 years behind the times!

Have to tell you, Ben, I've always liked Georgia Tech. I saw my first major college football game there back when Bud Carson was coach. We did the Varsity -- the whole nine yards. I always cheer for them over UGA. Your high school, McCallie, has sent a lot of football players to Tech -- Fletcher Sims, Ellis Gardner, others. But your prep rival Baylor School really had a pipeline to Tech going when Humpy Heywood, native of Augusta, Ga., was coach at Baylor. Legendary Tech players Rufus Guthrie, Leon Hardeman, Billy Teas, Chick Graning, Eddie Prokop -- and many others -- were Baylor players. Great names, BTW! And of course, Coach Bobby Dodd, who played at Tennessee for General Neyland, is the greatest Tech football coach in history.

Should be fun tomorrow. Look forward to the report!

Hopefully the weather will cooperate. We've gone from drought to flood conditions in the last couple months. If the weather holds I'll do updates via Twitter @ http://twitter.com/bfhall

Doing all the from a cell phone (though it has a decent keyboard) was pretty hard honestly. But fun. And the meet was excellent. Really well run. Had full programs. Ran on time despite the weather. And both teams competed very well. I'm wiped after 4+ hours standing/walking on the track.

Hopefully, the meet is back to being a yearly event. Timing is fairly hard with ACC's in mid/late April and SECs in mid-May.
