Here's one huge reason I hope that Ok State (aka Fernandez) isn't in the 4xM: the Lolo Jones Syndrome.

i.e., if he starts to hurt in an individual 5K, it'll be "easy" for him to drop out.

If he's running "for the team" and doesn't want to let his buddies down, he'll keep the pedal to the metal until the blows a tire.

Is the mystery team Oaklahome State? 8-)
Of course pure speculation at this point.

According to Ken Goe of the Oregonian....

    http://www.oregonlive.com/trackandfield ... t_for.html

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lananna wouldn't confirm whether the mystery team is Oklahoma State, which has super freshman German Fernandez and former Centennial star Ryan Vail.

    update from the RG........

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Relay event taking shape

The men’s 4-by-mile relay is shaping up to be quite an event at the Oregon Twilight meet on May 9 at Hayward Field.

Lananna said seven teams are now on board. Their collective target?

The collegiate record of 16:04.54 set by Michigan in 2005 and the U.S. record of 16:08.54 established by Athletics West in 1984.

On Saturday, Lananna said the field would include Oregon, the Eugene and Portland branches of Oregon Track Club Elite, an international squad from Australia, New Mexico, Virginia and one other unnamed collegiate team.

The UO relay team will include senior Galen Rupp, junior Andrew Wheating, sophomore Matt Centrowitz and one of three other seniors: Shadrack Biwott, Scott Wall or James Withers.

    per radio interview today....

Rupp will run the 5000 this weekend at the Oregon-UCLA meet. It has already been reported he plans to run the 10000 at the Oregon Relays.

Also per radio interview, he plans to run a 5000/10000 double at NCAA's.

Rebekah Noble has returned to school and is training after missing all of last year. Don't know her condition or if she will run any races this spring.

Would seem to put a crimp in any American/collegiate 4XMile attempt.

    Ken Goe from The Oregonian
    http://www.oregonlive.com/trackandfield ... st_34.html

"Reader Larry Tibbles took note of Oregon's planned April 25 assault on the U.S. and collegiate records in the 4xMile relay on the second day of the Oregon Relays, and notes that the Ducks have a long tradition of excellence in the event.

The Ducks twice set world records in the 4xMile.

The first record came in 1962, when Archie San Romani, Vic Reeve, Keith Forman, and Dyrol Burleson clocked a time of 16 minutes 8.9 seconds.

Six years later, the quartet of Roscoe Divine, Wade Bell, Arne Kvalheim and Dave Wilborn did it in 16:05.0.

The current world record of 15:49.08, set by Eamonn Coghlan, Marcus O'Sullivan, Frank O'Mara and Ray Flynn in Dublin in 1985, almost is certainly out of reach for Oregon.

But the collegiate record of 16:04.54, set by Michigan in 2005, and especially the U.S. record of 16:08.54, set by Athletics West at Hayward Field in 1984, are vulnerable."

At the "Track Tuesday" meeting this evening, Lannana mentioned that one of the International squads will be from New Zealand.
A NZ squad might give Oregona run for their money (PRs):

    Willis 3:50.66 (2008)
    Hyett 3:57.46 (2007)
    Blincoe 3:54.40 (2003 - and 3:35.50 in 2005. 2008 bests 3:39.97/3:57.65)
    Woolhouse 3:59.80 (2009)

Adding Providence's Kiwi Hayden Mclaren (3.57.78i) would help their cause

I think that Oregon has the talent to break the collegiate 4 x Mile & 4 x 1500 without Rupp & to break DMR with the team that won NCAA IF Centrowitz were to run 1200 & international and/or OTC teams could push them.

They could do all three in the next three weekends, but will they try?
