Well, so was Graceland College, for example. Besides, decathletes are used to not being in the center ring. They're lucky if they can get in the tent.

        e-mail I got:

<<Story goes at Arcadia that after 9 evnets an official told Beach he
needed a 4:50+ 1500 to break the record. Beach smirked and said he
was hoping for a 4:10. And of course he did it.>>

Man oh man, that "Duke" part takes my breath away. I'm delighted if it is true, but ( Norm Ogilvie forgive me) WHY ?
Isn't Shaun Wilbourn coaching there now? I personally think Cliff Rovelto at K-State would have been a solid decision. The staff of multi-event talent at KSU is downright ridiculous!

There is also a video interview of Curtis on the same site. Very impressive HJ, HH and 400m. He certainly looks capable of eventually breaking Toomey's deca 400m record.
... nothing really ever changes my friend, new lines for old, new lines for old.

I agree! A star is born! Bob Mathias, anyone? He looks so smooth, strong, fast, coordinated . . . so athletic! I've gotta think he's the USA star of 2012 as just a college junior!

just did a little research on this kid...

...in 2007, as a sophomore, he won 5 events at the New Mexico state meet:

                    110H -14.95* 4A SR in Prelims 14.48
                    400m -49.26
                    300H -37.99
                    200m -22.02* 4A SR in Prelims 21.82
                    Long Jump -23-0.25

                    in 2008:
                    110H -14.31w (1st place; 14.24 state record in heats)
                    300H -38.82 (1st place)
                    High Jump -6' -3" (1st place)
Long Jump -23-1" (1st place - state record)
                    200m -22.02 (2nd place)

                      QFE!

Definitely the potential for a great deca talent in the making.

It struck me part way through the video how well his marks compare with top women's marks event-by-event (e.g., 48.16, 10.99, 6.97, 4:09, ....).

Speaking of out of the center ring--one day later they forgot about Beach breaking the HS record by hundreds of points and gave the Outstanding Athlete award to Mason Finley, whose 221 was certainly a nice mark but...

Finley also won the shot: it's almost de rigeur (unfortunately) for MVP awards to go to multiple winners.
