  • IAAF Dakar Grand Prix: Start Lists

Dakar GP kicks off tomorrow wih the Shot event taking place on the historic Gorée Island.

Startlists for all events are now available here: http://www.iaaf.org/gp09/results/eventc ... index.html

Some good and some not so good fields.

The women's shot features former Olympic medallist Nadine Kleinert, recent European indoor medallist Denise Hinrichs, 19m+ thrower Anca Heltne and American Kristin Heaston.

The men's event features four Americans, including Hoffa & Cantwell, as well as Jamaica's Dorian Scott.

The event I'm most looking forward to is the wTJ, which is loaded:
    Marija Šestak SLO
    Yamilé Aldama SUD
    Hrysopiyí Devetzí GRE
    Magdelín Martínez ITA
    Joanna Skibinska POL
    Dana Veldáková SVK

    Wow!

Men's 3000m should be a good race too.

Both shot put events and the women's triple jump look very tasty indeed. Men's 3000m is solid too, and so is the w400.

I think the start-lists are good for an early-season event.

Do you reckon? They look weaker than we get down here for the Aussie meets...

With fields of 4 and 5 for most sprints, I'm sure there will be more SEN on the startline...

The event has been facing financial woes. The biggest share of the budget usually comes from the Senegalese governement and the city of Dakar. But until two weeks ago (I don't know if there were some changes since), they had not promised any money at all, forcing the relocation of the meet from the Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium (60,000 seats) to the Iba Mar Diop stadium (5,000 seats?) to reduce spending.

An article from le Quotidien (April 11) reports that IAAF president Lamine Diack and Senegalese NOC president Diagna Ndiaye came to the rescue of the meet, getting involved financially . The meet was running the risk of losing its IAAF Grand Prix label, a label that the Moroccan meet of Rabat may be lusting for, according to a member of the organising committee .

True - but most of the international athletes who compete in the Australian season have based themselves there for the winter so it has to be expected.

Some high school meets may even have better times.
