'Injured' sprinter shuns relay, could run 100m at Penns today

HAMPERED by a bit of discomfort in his left ankle, former 100 metres world record holder Asafa Powell will not represent Jamaica in the 4x100m on today's final day of the 115th staging of the Penn Relays at Franklyn Field on the Campus of the University of Pennsylvania in the USA.

However, the 2007 world 100m bronze medallist, who missed last week's UTech Classic here at Kingston's National Stadium after being originally down to contest the 200m and 4x100m relay, could compete in today's 100 metres.

"He will not be running the (4x100m) relay, we're considering still running the 100 metres. He's having a little bit of a problem with his ankle when he's running on the turn," said, Powell's agent Paul Doyle in an exclusive interview with Sporting World from Philadelphia yesterday.

"It's nothing to be concerned about, but it's something that will bother him when he's running on the turn, so that's why he's opting out of the 4x100," he added.

"The way the track is structured here at Penn, every leg runs about half their leg on the turn and half of it on the straight-a-way. It's tough for him running on the turn right now... he trained this morning (Friday) and tested it (left ankle) out and it was just a little bit unstable and the way that the track is structured here, even if he was to run his usual anchor leg, the first 40 metres or so of that leg is on the turn," Doylereasoned. Quizzed if the same ankle problem kept Powell out of last Saturday's UTech Classic, Doyle replied: "I'm not sure if that was what the issue was last week, but he's definitely here and he's had a little bit of problem with his ankle."

Meanwhile, a highly placed Observer source indicated that Powell, who anchored Jamaica's world record setting 4x100m team to gold at last summer's Olympics in Beijing, turned his ankle in training at UTech recently.

On Tuesday, April 21, a joint-press conference between meet organisers UTech and the MVP Track Club, did not shed any light as to why Powell did participate.

In the meantime, Doyle yesterday disclosed that the 26-year-old Powell, who has run under 10 seconds on 48 occasions, will be running his next 100m at the Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix in Doha on May 8.

Hopefully Bolt won't show up to replace him and USA don't drop the stick.

Funny thing is (and I am somewhat surprised I am saying this) even without Bolt or Powell I am not at all sure that the Jamaicans aren't still the favorite.

As proud as I am of Jamaica athletes, without Asafa and/or Bolt on the team it is a very tall order indeed to beat a relay time comprised of Walter Dix, Travis Padget, Shawn Crawford and Darvis Patton. With Asafa not running in the relay I consider the USA (Blue) team to be the definite favourite.

I was ready to make the Jamaicans very slight favorites based on the fact they have actually done some stick work with each other this year. Michael Frater and Nesta Carter have run the second and third legs of two MVP track club relays twice this year already. However I just looked at Dwight Thomas results for the year so far and 10.33,10.44 and 10.48 are not anywhere near top of his game for him. I am now ready to change my mind and go with USA BLUE.
