  • Will Claye, OU Frosh Field day

Had some fun today working horizontals at windy Oklahoma Invitational with winds typically in 4s and 5s, gusts to 7s and lulls to 1s and 2s..

Will Clay, OU Frosh won LJ with a windy 8.00 (26-3).also had a wind legal 7.86 (25-9.5)

Followed 30 minutes later by a windy 16.78 (55-0.75) and a monstrous 17.10 (56-1.25) teeny foul (not officially measured but could not resist sliding scope out for accurate approximation)

Both his LJ and TJ were announced as this years leading collegiate jumps.

I don't know what his 100 m time is but does not appear to be noticeably fast in his run up, especially in TJ, but has a hell of a lot of bounce for an undersized TJer. I don't know the distance of his phases but most of his distance is in the jump phase.

This guy's HS class has not yet graduated. Think about it.

Kevin Dilworth, the only "name' jumper in the field, had two high 7 m fouls, took a safe 7.41 third jump and missed final by one cm.

Too cool that we have our own insider than can sneak us this kind of info - thanks, lonewolf!!!

Claye another field eventer who got overlooked last weekend. He is taking over the all-time U.S. Junior list in the TJ (and is still a Junior next year). The top 11 performances ever (including two from the Regional):

      16.98i 55-8½ Christian Taylor (Florida) 3/14/09
      16.94 55-7 Will Claye (Oklahoma) 5/17/09
      16.85 55-3½ —Claye ! 5/17/09

      16.81(A) 55-2 Greg Neal (Tennessee) 6/05/82
      —Claye 5/30/09
      16.80i 55-1½ Allen Simms (George Mason) 1/19/01
      i —Claye 3/14/09
      16.79 55-1 Willie Banks (UCLA) 5/03/75
      16.72 54-10¼ Kenny Hall (Louisiana HS) 7/29/04
      16.70 54-9½ —Claye 4/18/09
      16.68 54-8¾ —Claye ! 5/30/09

17 year old Chinese kid name of Shuo Cao has jumped 17.13 (0.0) which would seem to indicate some potential...

Is Christian Taylor intending to do the 400 AND the triple jump, or will he have to choose? That looks to be a demanding double to contemplate.

If you're talking this year's NCAA, Taylor has no choice; he didn't run the 400 at Regionals. Indeed, he only ran the one (stunning one) at the Florida Relays the first weekend of April.

From his marks, is he a better long jumper or triple jumper? :?

Clay has a problem finding the board. He missed the 9 man LJ final by 2 cm. His first round jump 7.47 m from 20cm before the board left him in 10th place. His second jump 8.11 m was a 2cm foul. HIs third jump 7.46m, again from well before the board.
In the TJ, Claye's 6th round winning final jump 16.81 caught about half of the takeoff board. His leading third round 16.68, before Reid went 16.75 in the 6th , was from at least 30 cm before the foul line.
And, for once, the PA picked up on the enduing drama and informed the crowd, which reacted enthusiastically when the 16.81 went up on the board.
He had a windy 17.01 a couple of weeks ago and is consistent around 8.0 in LJ.
He went to his HS class graduation In AZ the week before Regionals and reportedly was sick all week. Didn't show. The kid is for real. If he can just figure out how get closer to the board and lose the tendency to be tentative on his first jump, he may do something impressive before he is old enough to vote.

I can back up your claim this kid is for real.

Had him @ one the of the Arkansas indoor meets and his jumping ability astounded me which I readily admit doesn't often happen. However, considering he just start'd college in January, Claye's ability is all the more impressive.

I agree that once this kid learns how to hit the board with any consistency, good night....

2 more years of eligibility in the Junior ranks...could he get Volker Mai's WJ Record of 17.50 (57' 5")?

Which makes it all the more exciting of what's in store.

I have confidence that, barring injury, he will eclipse that record. He runs off the takeoff into his hop, takes a modest step and gets a good jump because he maintains momentum with his low hop/step but I believe tweaking the hop/step may produce a longer total jump.
And, surely two more years of maturity should produce an incremental 50 cm.
