  • Texas High School Regional Champs Rescheduled (Swine Flu)

Cancelling regionals and still trying to have state sounds like a very serious logistical problem.

Oh for crying out LOUD! It's just the FLU people!

Now,that that is off my chest.....

Why not just push State back a week and run Regionals per usual?

Regionals were scheduled for May 1 and 2 (this weekend). Everything has been cancelled until May 11 (wiping out two weekends). I am guessing that starts to make rescheduling both a trick.

Agreed. And what difference is a week or two going to make? Media-led panic ignoring the 30,000 who die in the US every year from the flu.

would anyone be surprised--it's only track for god's sake--if they simply decided to wipe out the rest of the season?[/b]

Wow. Maybe the Florida officials will take a page from this book to save $.

All Texas h.s. sports/competitions have been suspended, not just track.

The first fatality in the US was in Houston - a Mexican 22month-old brought to the US in hopes of getting better treatment, I think. The close connection and high level of track with Mexico makes the state more vulnerable than most of the rest of the state. The state probably has some recommended or required steps when certain milestones are hit (declarations of emergency, etc) and that might have been the reason (I did not read the link but my wife does risk analysis on security and pandemic planning).

e-mail from a friend in Texas:

<<...don't know if you've heard, the Texas high school governing body just cancelled all of the state qualifying track meets because of the flu. We can have an NBA game with 20,000 people at it between Dallas and San Antonio but we can't have 3,000 people assembled in San Angelo or Lubbock.>>

This is what pisses me off about this cancellation hysteria. We can have high school basketball tournaments(and everything else) during the winter when thousands die annually from standard flu, but for some reason we have to run for the hills now.

They are considering postponing everything instead of canceling it: http://polevaultpower.com/forum/viewtop ... 95#p125884

Main hurdle is UT graduation, but good to see they're working on it(not that it ever should be happening in the first place!).
