The first combined events meet of the IAAF Combined Events Challenge gets underway today in Italy. A couple of good names in the start lists, including the return of Jessica Ennis after her Olympic year was disrupted by injury:

Ennis starts with a 12.98 100m hurdles performance :shock:

jess has jumped 1.90 in the HJ as well... great start!

She set a PB in the shot-put last week so fingers crossed for a good performance in the next event.

The long jump could be a bit iffy tomorrow because she had to change take-off legs but let's wait and see.

However, she still leads by more than 200-pts.

Still going well 13.19 so only 40cm behind her PB wohoo... hoping she will run sub 23.5 in the 200m and end off a great first day!! defo back...

i agree LJ could be the let down i hope she can jump around 6.20ish and i think she'll throw 40m in the javelin...

Has she had to change her take off leg forever or just until her injury full heal/she feels confident?

She ran 23.49 for 200m into a -0.5 wind, to finish the day with 4003 points.

Just as a completely useless piece of information, but if she were to jump exactly her PBs for the remaining three events, she'd end up with 6655. Obviously she won't, with getting used to jumping off her other foot in the LJ, etc, but there's a long season to perfect it.

If Ennis can avoid injury 'til Berlin, I think we're going to see an awesome Heptathlon duel between Fountain and Ennis. I'll have to wait until Gotzis to include Dobrynska, to see if she has recovered from a feeble indoor season. Chernova and Bogdanova may suprise also, but Fountain/Ennis are my favourites for the title thus far.

Brilliant from Jess - this is the first time she has amassed 4000pts and more on the first day.

Hoping for a 6.20m LJ, 40m JT and a 2:10 800m tomorrow.

If the top Heptathletes are 100 % fit it seems to me that the WC2009 is going to be Fountain for Gold; Bogdanova for Silver; Olympic Champ for Bronze; after that anybody for 4th to 6th. Ennis for a probable top 6 place.

I don't think Bogdanova plans to compete in Berlin. I quite like Anna but I think she is a little bit over-rated, bearing in mind her lifetime best is less than Jessica's, albeit by a few points.

also jess for 6th??? i think jess on form is a far better candidate than bogdanova she has higher pbs and more experience already....
