Jared Finley stood next to the ring behind Buena Vista High School as Demons senior Mason Finley — the best high school discus thrower in U.S. history — spun and unleashed a practice throw. About 200 feet away, toward the backdrop formed by the Rocky Mountains' Collegiate Peaks, Mason's mother, Lisa, noted the throw's trajectory and backpedaled to make sure the discus didn't hit her, whether on the fly or in its post-landing roll. Then she chased it down for her son. This small town in central Colorado, with an official population of 2,195, might seem an unlikely setting to watch a track and field national-record holder.

Won the state 3A discus title yesterday with a 3A state record of 214-1, well off his NHSR of 236-6. Competes in the shot today.
