  • Nigerian Athletes

Seems like Nigerian athletes have fallen off the face of the earth the past few years. They used to have some very good sprinters(Mens and Women) from 100 to 400m as well as the hurdles.

Haven't seen anyone significant from Nigeria for sometime now.

    Any explanations?

I believe it can be traced to a federation that's pretty much in disarray.

To piggyback gh, here's a link on the TFN homepage that will expound on the disarray:

Boy that article was really informative giving some insights into what happens in Nigeria (track and field programme). Only the writer is bent on confusing me with subject predicate battles in the sentences. Its like cart before the horse writing.

But all jokes aside, I do believe that Nigeria has a sweltering depth of potential in the short sprints that will set the sprint world ablaze if only they got their acts together. I mean; total domination.

They're too busy finding folks to share all that new found royal wealth.

in support of that claim, recall that Nigeria has over 150million people.

The sport is dying a slow death in Nigeria due to a combination of disinterest, lack of incentive and a lack of any leadership. As I said in the other thread, Nigeria's success in the 80s and 90s was due to the efforts of 1 or 2 individuals who have since left the scene.

Nigerians have been success after the 90's...I remember when I was at the All African Games in 03 they ran 1-2 in the 100 in 9.95 and 9.97, and have had other sub 10 runners since then. They also have a few athletes running for other nations now. Federation problems will damn near put a halt to a program if not handle correctly.

Oh, I don't know about that. Some country (Kenya)to the east of Nigeria never seems to have a shining federation, but somehow manages to regularly develop not just good athletes, but an almost overabundance of phenominal middle and long distance runners.

Federation disagreements and Federation corruption is 2 different things.
                          Kenya has disagreements.
