  • Shotputters who equaled or exceeded their HS marks.

What good HS shotputters exceeded their HS mark with the 16lb shot? Edit, Criteria is those who threw 60'+ in HS with the 12lb shot and how far they threw after HS with the 16lb shot.

    Those who did:
    Parry Obrien
    Bill Neider
    Dave Davis
    Randy Matson?
    Randy Barnes

    Dallas Long.

Are we talking about HS marks with the 16 lb or HS marks with the HS shot?

I believe he's talking about HS 12 vs. reg. 16.

In Long's case, he did not exceed. He threw 69-something with the 12, then 67-10 with the big one.

Yeah, by that criteria Long doesn't qualify. This would be a tough list to make and even tougher to compile. The term "good" HS shot putter needs a specific definition. Otherwise there might be any number of kids who were, say, 50 ft plus thowers in HS who got serious in college and exceeded their HS marks but pass under our radar.

Also, it is an interesting question to fill our collective idle track nerd time, but it is not especially informative if the goal is to determine whether elite HS throwers improve with age. For example, Long started throwing the 16 lb shot at world class levels as an 11th grader, became a WR holder later, but never equalled his HS implement PR with the big one. More recently, Noah Bryant missed his HS PR by 1" using the 16 pounder but there is no doubt that he was a much better thrower in college than he had been at age 18.

So wait. Did Michael Carter ever hit 81 with the 16?

After Carter threw his 81, several of the world's best with the 16'er expressed doubt that they could throw 81 with the 12 as Carter had just done.

As I mentioned before, I can't do 80' (with the SP arm-strike) with a freakin' soft ball !!

Long threw 61-8 with the 12 as a Jr. As a Sr in 1958 he threw 61-1/2 with the 16 which bested the NCAA college record, which had been set about 2 minutes prior by Dave Davis. Long broke the world record the next year as a frosh with a throw of 63-2. Pretty impressive. The NCAA record is now 72+ and there is no prep anywhere near the mark.

Looking at this simply, many of the Americans who have thrown over 71 with the international ball would probably qualify.

I immediately thought of Godina, but as I thought more, and realized than 71 footers in HS are not many, it seems this is a good place to start.

Going back to the 70s era, we can start right off looking at Feuerbach, Woods, Albritton, and Oldfield. Add Pete Schmock to the list as well. (How many of these guys exceeded 60 feet as preps? I know Albritton did.)

A couple of current PAC-10 guys who've done it:

Ryan Whiting of ASU threw 71-0 in HS with the 12lb
Last season, he threw 71-3.5i with the 16lb.

Zach Lloyd of Ariz, threw 67-4 in HS with the 12.b.
And now has a PR with 16lb. of 69-0
