  • Let's standardize the shot, a proposal

Maybe it's time to lose the glide and the spin.and level the playing field. Let's have the shot thrown from the snap position. Reduce the size of the ring to 4'.

This is the regular warm up toss and there is no reason it could not become the competition throw.

The benefits are: 1. fewer fouls, 2. distances reduced to more believeable levels, estimated to be in the mid 60s and 3. the event becomes a true measurement of strength and speed and 4. smaller arenas.

Heck, throw in the 10 meter dash and the 3 meter steeplechase, and I can host the Worlds in my living room!

Excellent thinking! And let's bring back the Standing HJ, LJ & TJ, instead of these stupid RUN and jump events we have now. We've already GOT running events - don't mix them up with jumping! How about the Kneeling Javelin Throw too? Make the stadium venue safer. The Pole Vault would be MUCH better if we restricted poles to 10 feet in length - now THAT would be a test of vaulting prowess! And the Marathon - that should be a three-legged race - rewarding competition AND cooperation! You're on to something here, Jack!

Nah! We DO have to draw the limits of our inanity somewhere, don't we?

Or one where they pull the guy in last place off the track every lap.

anything that people run slower or jump/throw shorter should be avoided like the plague. People like to watch things fly.

Better idea: as the runners approach the finish line the announcer calls out a random number between 1 and the number of athletes still in the race and the athlete that crosses the line in that place is eliminated. :P

Or we could really mess with the rules and DQ walkers who lift.

instead of a track (not too many spectators can see a competition, only 80,000 probably max) - lets run races in the streets- miles and dashes....

The same - or more - intentional fouls.

....and they could have scorecards to rate how well those things flew.

How about a larger circle for shot?

That's open to debate, when you consider that the 7-foot ring was invented for guys who were 5-10 and weighed 175lb. And who didn't spin.
