On the same theme, I recent read this.
“If you do one marathon on earth, you do New York,” Peggy Sailler, from St.-Malo, France, told me two years ago before she ran the race with more than 20,000 others from overseas.

What is it, I wondered, about the city’s signature event every fall that draws runners from 100 countries and unites all five boroughs of New York?

The blog has no answers but does advertise:
Over the next 26 weeks, as runners around the country train for the fall marathon season, I plan to use this column to explore the culture and the characters that make this race much more than just about sports.
The blogs writer wrote a book titled:
“A Race Like No Other: 26.2 Miles Through the Streets of New York”

Even though it is well known that big time track in the USA has faded over the years, and now is centered in Europe, road racing is still king in America. Many Africans and a few Russians (women) are reaping big pay days on American roads. Any thoughts on why?
