  • Defar Debuting at 10.000m (Stockholm Marathon on saturday)

Friidrott.se reports that Meseret Defar will contest a special 10.000m competition at Stockholm Stadion during the running of the Stockholm Marathon tomorrow (saturday). She will be accompanied by a strong contingent of Wirknesh Kidane, Aheza Kiros and Sentayehu Ejigu (14.47,62 Reebok winner this indoor season), who is also making her debut.

Defar believes it wil take a low-30 to be victorious and also qualify into Berlin at this distance.

Universal Sports will broadcast the marathon live... hopefully a peek or two at the 10.000m as well.

Has anyone known that Defar may move up this season?

Not being super fluent (OK, completely unaquainted with) Swedish, I can't pick up from the site whether this is a 10K roadrace or a 10000m track event.

    I presume it's the former...

What's the fastest debut ever over the distance?

Appears to be the 30.15,67 Dibaba ran in Sollentuna (Stockholm) 2005-06-28 according to Pela2's 10.000m deep list.

last year there was talk of a womens 10,000 meter track where everyone who is anyone would be invited, including defar, radcliffe, t. dibaba, and basically everyone who was worthy, it was supposed to be in june in the netherlands (i think in utrecht, i am not sure) in the night of the 10k meet, i had read on an ethiopian site defar would run the preclassic 2km and would run a 5km in floro norway the following week, i guess that report was wrong, and i was wrong as i had put on a thread on this site and letsrun, . so i apologize for the bad information.

i am excited about this race i expect defar to have a great year after her olympic disappointment she can go sub 30 minutes saturday and she may break the 29:31 world record, also kidane continues her comeback (the raebok web site has kidane in the 5k, so obviously she cant do both). of the 4 mentioned i say.
            1. defar 29:55
            2. kidane 30:10 (if she doesnt run new york)
            3. ejigu 30:20
            4. kiros 30:40

well kidane ran 30:19 solo at stanford a few years ago, i ALWAYS predict optimistically on the fast side, she is absolutely capable of sub 30, i guess we will find out in a couple of hours.

of course she's capable but considering we've only seen 3 sub 30min runs in history 2 of them being in an OG final last year and the other one which i happily dismiss i think it's highly unlikely that she will run that fast with nobody who's likely to take it out at that pace. All the fast 10k runs have had either Paula, Lorna or Sun to take the pace on. Kidane has run very close to 30min in 2003 but it was in a very competive race with 5 people together at the bell. I don't know what form she is in right now but i would be very suprised if it's sub 30 form and i'd be even more suprised if she was willing to tow Meserat round to be outkicked on the last lap

                    but we'll soon find out

when does the 10k start? if the marathoners finish in the stadium some marathoners will be coming in for 6 hours or so and the track will be a mess long after that. the marathon started at 2 P.M. stockholm time. so i would think unless they are using a different track, the 10k would have to be before or during the marathon?

Not watching the tv, so no update. It should have been contested during the marathon. Try www.friidrott.se for an update.
