Well, that was an anti-climax, wasn't it boys and girls?

Defar explained that the "bad" performance was partly caused by high wind and the heat (it was around 25 degrees celsius)

She's lucky Linet Masai wasn't in the race.

Is that 77F? I thought that Addas Ababa (or wherever Ethiopians train) was around 80F. I learned that when I taught high school Geography 40 years ago, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

No question that wind is a problem for any runner. The late Brutus Hamilton was my coach in 1960 - 1961. He said that wind bothered runners more than heat, cold and rain.

Though the heat may have a low Farenheit comparison, it shot way up yesterday. It was 16-18 on friday. It affected many people in the marathon.

I've run 50 races between 10K & Marathon with PRs of 33:18 & 2:38:41. While 80F may be tolerable for a 10K it can have a huge negative effect on a Marathon.

I recall that Geb set a 10K WR at Oslo in 80F heat in 1997. I'm certain that he couldn't do that in a Marathon.

I think it's cooler because of the altitude and besides which, I'm sure they do most of their training early in the morning. And of course, training in hot conditions isn't the same as racing in them.

Today felt even worse outside, and the temps were one degree lower than yesterday at this time.

According to Athletics International, this wasn't Defar's debut. She was actually sixth at the Ethopian Championships (33:54.41) in 1999!

If so, the IAAF made a miss as well:

                          t. dibaba has an automatic 10k spot, defar says she wants to run the 5 and 10k at worlds, there is a 10k with most of ethiopia's top runners on utrecht on sunday i was thinking utrecht may be ethiopia's defacto 10k trials, but defar is not on the start list (yet anyways) so i wonder if ethiopia will have t. dibaba and defar and the top 2 at utrecht sunday or is there a different way they will select their team?
