  • H.S. 4:05.17 1600m

Jeff Thode, sr, (Conant H.S. - Hoffman Estates, Ill.) won the Ill. H.S. Assoc. State Boys' 1600m Championship with a solo 4:05.17 FAT

    My splits 4:04.91: 59.35, 63.42, 62.08, 60.08
(add .24 to my hand time = 4:05.15 so I was damn close eye balling it from the stands.)

He went out hard in the 800m but faded to 5th. He would have needed a big PR to win the 800 - won in 1:51.13. Thode came back in the 1600, went right to the front and ran what looked like a solo time trial. He was by himself the entire way. Zach Dahleen, sr., (Orland Park, Ill. - Sandburg H.S.,4:10.25) closed well but was five seconds back.

NOTE: Thode missed a month of cross country because of a collapsed lung and was hospitalized. He still came back to win the IHSA 3A state XC title.

He will attend Iowa in the fall.

"... Thode missed a month of cross country because of a collapsed lung and was hospitalized. "

Well, he has some good company there. Three years ago Craig Miller from PA lost a chunk of his senior season to a clasped lung. At Wisconsin he has since: 1) run 3:37; 2) finished second NCAA Mile(i); 3) finished fourth NCAA 1500 (and second in the Regional this year to last year's second-place finisher); 4) won Big Ten 1500 by finishing in about 1:50; and 5) been on some NCAA top-5 XC teams.
