  • LM - JW and Golden League

Does anyone have any info on whether/if they will participate this year. I do not see JW scheduled for the 1st one on June 14th? This would be a great series between these two even if no one won all 6.

Who do you think will win the match-ups this season and of course Berlin.

As of now I say LM but if JW gets back to his 43.4 shape then I take JW.

As no one is invincible, Merritt, who is still slower than Wariner on paper, will be hard-pressed to not be dealt a loss or two along the path this season.

Of note: No Olympic 400m champion since Steve Lewis has gone undefeated at 400m the year following his gold medal. Note: Johnson retired in 2000, therefore there was no 2001 comparison to make.
    • 1989: Lewis had no losses[/*:m:77xrj0an]
    • 1993: Watts had three losses[/*:m:77xrj0an]
    • 1997: Johnson had one loss [/*:m:77xrj0an]
    • 2001: No reiging champion[/*:m:77xrj0an]
    • 2005: Wariner had four losses[/*:m:77xrj0an]

Who is scheduled for June 14 in any event? I have seen nothing.

I still fear that they will meet for the first time on August 21 at WCh.

They will meet before then at 400m only if and when some meet promoter decides to pay they what they and their agents believe the match-up is worth. that's the way the world works.

If Berlin is the 1st time then somthing is wrong with the sport that BS.

Part of what is wrong with T&F and will help continue to keep it a minor league sport . . .

Lewis lost to Tim Simon in Edinburgh in '89, 45.21–45.35. (and because of injury didn't run NCAA or TAC)

Why don't the organizers pay the athletes on % of the total sales of the tickets, ads, and maybe a basic flat $ amount to show up. That way there pay is not up to the pencil geeks and the egos of the athletes. If people want to see them they will come and if the organizers promote it right they will come. Whats wrong with this??

Do you know of any professional sport that pays its athletes that way?

                    Edited to fix typo.

I do not know squat about how they pay anyone - so no - but you gota start somewhere. Also it seems to me that the excessive amount of pay some professionals get is a result of advertisments and promotional abilities coupled with the psychology of humans that you can make anyhting desirerable and popular beyond expectations - take golf for example. I loved when they took this sport and pumped it up with ads that made it sound as if it was the greatest most exciting and competive thing that ever existed, that coupled with the narrators voice that seems like a James Earl Jones mix with that of the movie theater guy. :P

Thank you. Chalk one loss up to Tilastopaja as well.

So how does JW go from 20.30 at the end of May to 20.77 now? And how does that bode for this summer's 400s? Not well, methinks. [Not that LM intimidated JW with his Eugene times!]

                            Excellent question--especially in view of his 2006 & 2007 200 finishes.

My bet is that coach Hart revamped his training to the point where Wariner was going through a strength buildup cycle and he was working through the national championships for an August peak. He was afforded that luxury because of his bye. The speed will be there in August along with the strength and we will see a better JW then. I don't think we will see a JW that was better than the 2007 version (i.e. 43.4) until 2010 and beyond.
