If you factor in inflation, real prize money has gone down at the World Champs over the past decade or so.

Of course, the endorsement angle can play into the hands of smaller countries (to a point) - I'm sure Jefferson Perez makes a hell of a lot more for being THE man from Ecuador's perspective (other than footballers) and Kelly Holmes, Stefan Holm, Jana Rawlinson did better in their respective home countries than Bryan Clay, Reese Hoffa etc...

IAAF should consider also going to a team points sttructure for the world games rather than a medal count. This way a team is rewarded for placing a runner in the final. IMO finishing 4th at the world champs is a huge achievement and deserves more respect.
