I'm not sure what the financials of the World Championship is , but I must say I am surprised at the pittance paid out to athletes. $60K for 1st place sounds like a payout that would be reasonable...a few decades go. I'm all for athletics for the love of the sport but T&F needs to do a better job of compensating its own.

But, $60K is often just the start of it. Depending on their event and their home country they will be getting greater appearance money, endorsements etc in the short-medium term (and perhaps beyond if they generate any celebrity from it.

Of course, the endorsement angle can play into the hands of smaller countries (to a point) - I'm sure Jefferson Perez makes a hell of a lot more for being THE man from Ecuador's perspective (other than footballers) and Kelly Holmes, Stefan Holm, Jana Rawlinson did better in their respective home countries than Bryan Clay, Reese Hoffa etc...

IAAF should consider also going to a team points sttructure for the world games rather than a medal count. This way a team is rewarded for placing a runner in the final. IMO finishing 4th at the world champs is a huge achievement and deserves more respect.

Why can't they do both team points and a medal count?
