This forum is not intended to "help" any athletes. The least we can hope is that it doesn't harm any!

These chat boards are the equivalent (time some significant factor) of the back-and-forth that one might have in a mixed group of friends and acquaintances in a bar somewhere........except that, with the inter-tubes thing, that free-wheeling, joking, questioning, challenging, and occasionally insulting group coversation is being recorded for eternity and broadcast to the world.

I don't know whether Alan Webb monitors this forum but I will wager someone who does relays its contents and opinions to him.

In conversation with perhaps a dozen University coaches this year, everyone of them, say they and/or their athletes either lurk or post here. Amused by some comments and offended by others, none admit having gleaned anything helpful herein but do appreciate the attention..

You know, with the declining quality of hammy's posts matched against this new generation of quicker-to-the-keyboard commentary here that makes his old-fashioned use of the English language seem like something from a different era, the fact he can't even beat Webb or Powell in a race (but maybe Naylor) -- and he doesn't even have a sponsor.

Oh, the inhumanity of it all. My 20th century language (mostly grammatically correct, rarely a misspelling, no LOLs or ROTFWLs; hell, I even read two newspapers every day - I must be dead already), my bad hammy not allowing me to beat over-the-hill high jumping desert rats such as Naylor (of all the indignities), and now to be pummled online by the likes of billjr?? Oh, and Phil Knight never returns my phone calls or emails anymore. How can I live in such depths of despair???

After a last weekend of T&F Nirvana at the CA HS State Meet I am headed up to Yosemite. When you see the story of the guy who was BASE jumping without a chute off of Half Dome today, you'll be sorry, ExCoastRanger, for suggesting that this was clearly my only option. Yes, you'll be sorry!

I've read before of athletes saying they quit reading internet message boards because it messed with their mindset.
It's like actors reading reviews. Some can take the comments and criticism for what they are and consider the sources, some can't.
As a pro that's something you have to know about yourself.

Personally I got hammy's joke in the context in which it was made.
And in light of the response I was tempted to start yet another thread: "Should bad hammy commit suicide?"

As long as it was during a race....it'll help. Otherwise his opinion is worth zippo....or so I've heard.

I've heard that on here too. If I ever announce I'm going to attempt an endurance feat in the desert it'll mean I've lost my mind. In that case, will someone please shoot me?

At any rate, Men's Racing posted an interview with him 2003.05.19, of which he had the following to state:

MR: Some top runners don't like to read about their competition or read about themselves on message boards. Do you think there might come a point when it would be advantageous to stop reading that stuff?

SM: I don't know, there's a lot of trash on it and stuff. I don't know if I want to read all the trash talking about me as I get better. I just kind of ignore that crap and read what I want to.

I believe Webb does, too.

What if an athlete posts on here and we don't know ? I guess it's not impossible. Actually, I would say the possibility that at least some are lurking is quite high, there aren't many other popular T&F sites out there.

I think hammy wrote it to garner attention,but not all attention is good.

I absolutely can't imagine that anyone would post something on an internet message board just to garner attention.
