    Lewis 8.72A (2) Sestriere 31Jul 94
    Joe Greene 8.66A (2) 21 Jul 92
    Kareem Street-Thompson 8.64 (2) NCAA 18 Jun 94
    Conley 8.63 (2) TAC 20 Jun 86

    There are probably others.
To answer "who won?" question we turn to pela's site and the following are found:
    Sestriere 31Jul 94 8.95A (+3.9) Mike Powell
    vs Lewis 8.72A(+3.9), 8.68A, 8.51A, 8.43A (all windy) and 8.66A (legal)
I could find no more Powell marks from that meet

    Sestriere 21 Jul 92 8.99A (+4.4) Mike Powell
    vs Greene 8.66A (+4.0)
    Powell backs up with 8.85A (+3.8), 8.84A (+4.0), 8.80A (+3.0), 8.75A (+3.4), 8.65A (+3.7)
    Greene with 8.65A, 8.34A

    NCAA Knoxville 18 Jun 94 8.68 (+4.1) Powell
    vs Street-Thompson 8.64 (+3.5)
Powell backs up with legal 8.51

    TAC Eugene 20 Jun 86 8.67(+3.3) Lewis
    vs Conley 8.63 (+3.9)

Wouldn't pela's site have that stuff?

Unless you are Carl Lewis, you are probably thrilled beyond belief that you jumped over 28'. If you are Carl Lewis, you either think, "Damn I made him work for it" or "damn, damn, damn". Still, that would be astonishing to average 29' and lose the competition.

GH, thanks for taking the time to craft this list. This is part of why we come back so often.

    :?:

I looked at it and really enjoyed it. Thanks.

Re: 10 vs 7, It was just an observation. Actually, I wondered if getting the next three guys in the series (longest losing jumps) was going to be one of your quizzes.

Lewis AVERAGED 8.83+ (about 29) and lost. I am not sure when there will be a LJ competition to match this, but I might be a pretty old guy by then (and the comp is already in its 18th year).

In that case, you say the person who beat me had to set a World Record to do it...

    Nice list.

It's so easy to forget how epic that '91 battle was. Man, 8.91m and 8.84m and you lose?!

It's also sort of fitting that Lewis tops this list...after all he broke the hearts of Myricks, Powell and Emmiyan on multiple occasions.

I still remember that 8.76m vs. 8.74m competition. I thought there was no possible way Lewis could win. Man was I wrong.

    I'm giddy with excitement.
