From the Men's NCAA 100m - Mookie Salaam (Brooklyn meets the mid-East?)
and
from the latest T&FN HS section - Turquoise Thompson. Beautiful.
While reading the latest issue this evening, I said the same thing to my wife about Turquoise Thompson - beautiful name and beautiful young lady.
I agree, very nice sounding.
And my birthstone! [As if anyone cares.]
Cool sounding names always have balance. The Tuquoise wouldn't work as well without the Thompson!
In the 1974 Commonwealth Games wrap-up story (issue after the coverage issue; one of my personal keepsake gems!), T&FN made mention of some of the cool sounding African names in the meet. "Silver Ayoo" and "Fatwell Kimaiyo" come readily to mind.
I liked the pole vaulter with the last name "Woepse"
One of the original PVer Woepse's kids just won the CA HS state meet PV this past Saturday.[/quote:74yxu2mk]
We saw Greg compete at SJSU a loooong time ago, and yes, the all time name for pole vaulting. Our middle daughter was involved with mangagement at the Togo's chain, and she and Greg got franchises in SoCal and moved down here. His two older kids vault for UCLA, and the eldest scored at the PAC10 meet. Apparently, there are more kids in the system, so lotsa PVers is my guess. Probably a bit like Jan Johnson teaching Chelsea (sp?) Michael, CA HS champ is a junior.
