"A college teammate set up the race for me at a high school track at Tilsonburg, Ontario, on July 4, 1980,"

That used to be a great meet and the town only had about 10000 people out in tobacco country in the middle of nowhere.

I really enjoyed Dave's article--well researched and interestingly written with good up-to-date quotes.I saw saw Jim Spivey win one of his two NCAA titles in 1982 @ Provo, Utah.

I'd love to see a similar article on sub 4 athletes for other states. Which state has the most? I bet Garry Hill can tell us....

                Re: Sub-4:00 Milers from Illinois

We now need to get a state's "mile power" rating by normalizing these numbers with population.
                i.e. #sub-4's/state's population.

Just glancing at that list, I'd say South Dakota wins.

Using the above list of milers by state and using the 2000 population figures, I calculated the # of sub-4 milers per million people in the state. The undisputed "miler power" champion is (the envelope please...) Oregon!
                    The list:

Shane Healy is Irish, ran at the '96 Olympics and '97 World for Ireland (was coached by Eamonn Coghlan at the time as was Niall Bruton in '97).

T&FN research--unless we were misled--turned up that Healey had dual citizenship, but at the time of his first sub-4:00 had never represented Ireland, so belongs on the list.
