Galkina-Samitova seems to be of great versatility and ambition - I still remember her attempt in last year's Olympics on 5000m, albeit with less success, in comparison to her recent 1500m victories. Anyway, I'd love to see established athletes trying shorter distances

What do you think of her chance of winning something really big in this new event?

she won bronze at the 2004 world indoors, so she's shown that she has the finishing speed :wink:

If she drops to around 4:00 this summer, I think she will have a decent chance to medal in Berlin

other notable performances from this meet were 1.95 from Svetlana Shkolina, and 2.30 by Tereshin in the HJ, and 55.84 from Melaine Walker in the 400 hurdles....

It's not really a new event for her. She actually started as a 1500m runner back in 2000 and then her big break in the event came in 2004 where she set her still PR of 4:01(her previous best was 4:13 from 2001) and took the bronze in the World Indoor Champs. Last year she doubled steeple/5000 at the Olympics (she has a 14:33 best), so a 1500/steeple double could be a possibility for her, though I think it would be easier to qualify for Russia in the 5000 than the 1500 given their depth in the shorter event.

Either she is no good as a 1500 runner or is not in much shape or we are in for one of the biggest re-writings of an American record (Steeple) in a long time (given that the AR is 9:22 and JB just ran 3:59= 4:02 - 0:03, and G-S has a 8:58).

Put it this way, what in the world is exciting about GS, who has a steeple time 24 seconds better than Barringer, and then runs a 1500 3 seconds slower -- more of a yawn than a major headline in my book.

Well who knows what GS could have run for the 1500 when she ran 8:58; she rarely ran the 1500 in paced sub4:00 races when in the middle of the steeplechase season. In fact, it seems that most steeplechase women just focus on the steeple so it's hard to get a good assessment of their true 1500/5000 times. Below is a profile of all steeplers faster than Barringer (I sent this to a friend at Running Times in March, so Barringer's times would of course be updated). Interestingly, only Barringer and Turava have recorded sub4:00 1500m times....

1500 - there are 10 out of 14 people with 1500 marks, Barringer is 7th out of 14.

Mile - only 6 with marks, she is #2 on the list, but you know how infrequently fast miles are run.

3000 - 3rd on the list!

5000 - 4th on the list!

Note that a lot of the PR's for the above athletes came a year or two or more before their steeple PR, so they probably could run faster, but they switched over to the steeple and thus just don't run the other distances except for pre-season stuff. But still, Barringer's PR's are from collegiate races indoors, so that has to bode pretty well for this year. 9:10-9:15 steeple in summer '09 seems reasonable...
