  • It's Ma's army all over again.

I've only just noticed the 20k results from Adler in February

    1:24:56 Olga Kaniskina RUS 19/01/1985 1 Adler 28/02/2009
    1:25:26 Vera Sokolova RUS 08/06/1987 2 Adler 28/02/2009
    1:25:26 Anisya Kirdyapkina RUS 23/10/1989 3 Adler 28/02/2009
    1:25:32 Yelena Shumkina RUS 24/01/1988 4 Adler 28/02/2009
    1:25:52 Larisa Emelyanova RUS 06/01/1980 5 Adler 28/02/2009

The previous world record, achieved by Ivanova ( a proven drugs cheat) was 1'25:41.

So 4 Russian women beat it in this race. Will it be ratified? Kirdyapkina is flippin 19.

Nope, they had Russian judges only. (Same reason Kaniskina's 1:25:11 from the '08 edition wasn't ratified.)

I noticed quite a lot of the juniors who did so well in that race pretty much bombed out at the European Cup.

But so did many non-Russians, with respectable times from international competitions to their name. Not everybody likes hot, humid weather...

The Russian winter meet pretty much annually produces times which indicate that their definition of foot-on-the-ground isn't quite the same as that used internationally.
