Any new tips on places to stop on the drive from Portland Airport to Eugene this week? I think we had a thread about this last year.

Obviously, if you are taking a straight shot from the Portland airport to Eugene, your choices are somewhat limited. The state capitol is in Salem and you can see the dome from the highway. You could also go into town and wander about the grounds (I never haveops: ).
I you have a bit of time, the Oregon coast is pretty spectacular. Drive on US30 to the mouth of the Columbia and hang a left at US101. Astoria is kind of neat, and the coast is great. Florance is the coastal town west of Eugene, state hwy 126. The swing would be a fairly long day (you would want to stop a few times to just look).
If you are a wino (or wineaux) the Willamette Valley is rife with vinyards. Some really wonderful Pinot Noirs, and other varietals as well. The valley runs roughly parallel to I5, maybe 10 miles to the west.
Both of these excursions are not high speed, make time kinda drives. The wine country has the advantage that you are pretty close to the interstate if you need to speed things up.

Really.
Also the wineries around McMinnville. Archery Summit would be a good one to start with. Also in the McMinnville area is the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, home of Howard Hughes' Spruce Goose and tons of other aircraft (really a very, very nice museum).
Lastly in the McMinnville area is the only Frank Lloyd Wright home in Oregon, the Gordon House. It was on a property bought by heathens from California who were going to tear it down so that they could build their retirement McMansion. Preservationist stepped in, disassembled it piece by piece, and reassembled it on the grounds of the The Oregon Garden, a nice botanical garden.

Other than that... watch for the maniacal speed demons on I-5.

The hammster's recommendations are right on the money. I was trying to remember the location of that great airplane museum (without resorting to The Google), but see that he's already got the info above. The wine country is great fun, and the airplane museum is remarkably good. Plenty to do off the main highway...

gh-- I know you're fond of Marche, so you might want to consider one of their French regional dinners. This month it's this Wednesday.

Most of my suggestions would be in the Portland area:
Powells Books main store downtown
McMenamins Edgefield east 8 miles on I-84
The actual Rose Garden on the edge of Forest Park
Portland has a wide varity of excellent resturants and brew pubs
If you have the time while in Eugene, take a drive up the McKenzie River on highway 126. Excellent scenery and fly fishing.
Just a minor correction, Creswell is south of Eugene not north.

I think it's more like an hour and a half, especially if you are not wanting to talk to a highway patrol guy.
99 % of the time, I buzzed directly through from Portland to Eugene, from the North, of course.
The other 1 %, which was planned, I took a little tour to the East, and ended up in Sweet Home, Oregon (real name). There, I caught a little country music concert, which was headlined by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, not publicly hooked up at the moment, but you could feel the energy from the stage....lt was very cool, or hot....
