So, were there no TJ's this year. Seems like this event the jumpers rarely compete?

          Welsch
          Lewis
          McLain

My pick is Lewis with McClain breathing down her neck itching to get some payback for losing to Lewis last year in college

As a Marks Snob, I'd really, really like at least one 47 and a couple 46s, but alas, I fear it is not to be. The plight of Ami wTJers continues to vex me (as do the wJTers and wHTers).

Do you think it comes from a lack of overall body strength?

My guess is that the problem has these elements:
                  • 1. It is not a glamor/high-reward event
                    2. Good candidates are lost to: a) the sprints; and b) other sports
                    3. The coaching is less than ideal (but how can there be NO qualified coaches that can attract good candidates?); and
                    4. there are limited opportunities starting even from HS and youth T&F where it is a bit of an orphan event

Note that I am not the smart one here, Marlow and others (including tafnut  ) have made these points numerous times here.

                    1. yes
                    2. yes
                    3. as you note, there certainly ARE good coaches around
                    4. there is PLENTY of opportunity! Every stinkin' year we have some very good HS girls who seem to disappear after HS. Are coaches simply not recruiting them? Or are they just turning them into hurdlers or LJers (which IS easier to coach)? It really isn't an orphan event; there's plenty of girls competing in it at all the track meets we go to.

My only answer is that other countries focus on it more, because it really is an event you can 'change' an athlete a lot in. Really good technical training and brutish weight room work does wonders for the TJ. It's the same with the HT and the JT. Other countries see it as an area that can be exploited very well. We don't.

Welsch did well, Marks not at all. To Berlin, not very good expectations, still a weak event in US TF.
