(this may have originally been stated elswhere, but what does the asterisk behind the ranking mean ... athlete moved up/down from last ranking?)

      What I know-

The number in the right hand column is the athlete’s position in the ’08 U.S. Rankings.

If the athlete wasn’t ranked in ’08, then the ’07 rank is given in parentheses.

An “nr” means the athlete didn’t rank in either ’08 or ’07 (but may have earlier).

Rupp is declared for the 5k. Do the experts at TFN not think he will be in the top 10? Or do they know he is only entered if something goes wrong in the 10k?

Secondary are they really only running a final and no qualifying in the 5k? There are 34 athletes declared with two additional in the open list (one of whom is Lagat.) If the race doesn't go out fast this could get ugly.

I wonder what the runners would prefer? No heats or not?

I think the latter has been stated by the Rupp camp.

The Men's 5,000m run event will be contested as a Final on time. If there is a need to run sections in this event, then all entered, qualified and declared athletes in the 5,000m run who have met the IAAF 2009 World Championships "A" or "B" standard will be seeded into the faster section

18 in the 5,000, 10,000 and 10km race walk, 18 in all field events and 20 in the heptathlon. The "B" Standard will be used only to fill the fields to the minimum size if not enough athletes have made the "A" Standard. For notification purposes, a current phone number must be provided during the declaration process.
Well if this is right then

Top 18 or well the fast heat only include the top 7 who are under the "B" standard?

I guess Nelson gets bumped if Lagat enters and they fill in others as top runners pull out?

Are they going to have the heats set up and adjust as some on the top on the list pull out? Or will the fast heat get smaller as the declared scratch?

For notification purposes, a current phone number must be provided during the declaration process.
Hope the runners gave them their cell #'s and will keep them on during warm-ups, as you may never know when the call up will come.

I just realized that Fam is not running the SC and is opting for the 5K!

Guess that takes out someone's spot!

2 sections of the 5000. Not sure if they'll move anyone from the slow to the fast after scratches. I'd say there's a good chance 4 of the guys in the fast heat, who are in the 10,000, won't run.

Add Fernandez as another potential scratch from the fast section.

                        Famiglietti
                        Solinsky
                        Tegenkamp

Not much of a change here. I just don't know if Famiglietti's kick is that good. ?

Does anybody here know if Fernandez is running this? I believe his presence would make it more interesting, as he and Jager might have some wheels at the end of a moderate pace, which might be just the elixir to provide some of the big guns with courage , although most of them have decent kicks as well.

Each of the "Big Guns" has a superior or pretty much equivalent 1500m PR to either Jager or Fernandez at this point.

What of McDougal? Injured? He should be in the thick of things in the 5K or 10K.
