Why did he pass his last 3 jumps? He was knocked out of the top 3 and didn't attempt to get back on the team.

Probably planned to go to pan am junior meet or, moot point, as UT football practice will start around Aug. 1.

Apparently he started cramping up after the record jump.

This is a huge record (20 years old!!).

Why isn't there more buzz about this?

Wasn't the guy who held it before Bentley from Willingboro (sp?) NJ?

Bentley managed 8.16 in Pedro Candioti CARD Track in Santa Fe (Argentina).

                  I actually train right there.

My coach (age 39, steeplechase PB 9'05'' as junior and pre-selected for that Junior Pan Ams- ) still remember clearly the jump. (yet stadium record)

Coach told me that people who where in the stands thought Dion's last step would be 8 inches -at least- in fault. But, helped by an incredible speed and strong determination , he was able to stutter-stepped last 7 meters!!!!

However, 89' junior PanAm UsaTF team was a mixed team with some young stars but mostly they're a "B" Team ...

                  Sorry for the bad english.

I remember Goodwin from Bydgoszcz last year. He won gold there, but the thing that impressed me most was that in the interview after the competition he said he had a goal of jumping 8 meters soon. Imagine that, an American athlete talking metric - what is the world coming to?

Another oddity was that USATF one of these past four days listed marks in metric on their news site, followed by imperial - rather than the other way around.

For example, of Krais yesterday: "She had individual event wins in the 100mH (13.97), high jump (1.69m/5-6.5) and long jump (5.77m/18-11.25)."

Oh dear. Surely that is one of the last signs of the impending Apocalypse!
