I really like it when meets have the live in-progress results like this one does. Note to other meets: do it like this!

Slow start for Tomasz Majewski - 19.42 and 20.30 so far, and he's in third place behind Pavel Sofin and Andrey Mikhnevich. I hope he comes through - it's one thing getting beaten by a top American every now and them, but he shouldn't be losing to Europeans.

Edit: But TBH, these Europeans are throwing pretty well today. Mikhnevich just improved to 21.02.

But he came closer to letting yet another European beat him...

        1. Mikhnevich (BLR) 21.02
        2. Sofin (RUS) 20.80 PB
        3. Majewski (POL) 20.48
        4. Fortes (POR) 20.43

Ukhov and Rybakov both cleared 2.34 in the HJ competition.

Naide Gomes is now leading with 6.94 before the 6th round.

Women's SP is strong, too, with Nadezhda Ostapchuk and Anca Heltne both setting SBs (19.54 and 19.08, respectively).

Does anyone know what happened to Guliev and/or Kim? Both false starts or what?

Maria Savinova won the 800 with a WL time of 1:57.90, ahead of Yelena Kofanova 1:58.60.

Gomes won the LJ with her 6.94.

Ostapchuk improved to 19.88 with her last throw. Austra Skujyte set a PB with 17.75 down in fifth place. She is apparently now a full time shot putter - she hasn't competed in any other events this year.

Three women in Russia under 51 seconds and a fourth at 51.41. Should this be taken seriously, by Allyson and company? Can either of these two teams be challenged?

                        Gomes is amazingly consistent.

Is there any doubt it should? The Russians have regularly been fighting it out with the Americans over the last decade - usually losing, but it was generally close.

Well the interesting thing about the 3 sub 51's is that firstly, 21 yr old Krivoshapka, the european indoor champ this winter, won in her first individual race outdoors (she ran a relay in the US) in a great 50.24. A brilliant PB and right up there on the world lists. She must be looking at sub 50 this summer and be considered a medal threat in Berlin at this stage.

Secondly, Natalya Nazarova, now 30, finished third in 50.95, her fastest time since the Russian champs in 2007, and her fastest outside those champs since the Olympics in 2004.

Thirdly, Guschina and Kapachinskaya ran the 200m instead, so when they finally all meet at the Russian Champs we're going to see a great battle to make the team.
