CANTWELL WOWS, STUNS CROWD AT MU ALL-COMERS
Former Tiger threw for over 72 feet in the shot put, the longest indoor throw since 2000
COLUMBIA, Mo.—Missouri track and field post-collegian Christian Cantwell (Eldon, Mo.) took a gigantic step in proving to be one of the best shot putters in the world Saturday at the Missouri All-Comers meet. Cantwell won the event with a throw of 72 feet, ¼ inch (21.95m), the best throw in the world since 2000. The crowd surrounded the shot put arena encouraging Cantwell to the enormous mark.
The crowd of just over 1,500 witnessed Cantwell’s throw that now ranks 12th all-time in the indoor world records and as the fourth best mark recorded by an American. The last American to throw above 72 feet was Randy Barnes, the World Record Holder in the event, when he threw for 72 feet, 7 inches in the Bronx, N.Y. in 1989. Barnes’ world record of 74 feet, 4¼ inches (22.66m) occurred in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1989.
Today’s mark is also Cantwell’s all-around personal-best for both indoor and outdoor venues and sets a new Hearnes Fieldhouse record. His previous best of 70 feet, 11¼ inches (21.62m) occurred in Salamanca, Spain in July 2003. Cantwell now holds four of the top six indoor throwing distances in the world in 2004. Three of which have occurred in Missouri’s Hearnes Fieldhouse.
Also today in the men’s shot put Missouri junior transfer Conrad Woolsey (Excelsior Springs, Mo.) achieved a personal-best as well and improved his NCAA provisional qualifying mark to 62 feet, 1 inch (18.92m), placing him near the top ten in the nation and in a good spot for qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Junior Chris Horn (O’Fallon, Ill.) set a personal-best winning the men’s long jump with a mark of 23 feet, 6¼ inches. Freshman Greg Bracey (Milwaukee, Wis.) won the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 22.24, also setting a personal-best. Other event championships came from Holly Scherder in the women’s weight throw (60-1¾), Merry Uchiyama in the women’s mile, Kristin Hansen in the women’s 800, Jenny Bybee in women’s high jump, Jennifer Bennett in the women’s pole vault (12-6), Bjorn Sommerfeldt in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, and Jesse Sims in the men’s high jump.
The Tigers will now set their sights on the upcoming championship season next weekend. The Tigers will travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Big 12 Indoor Championships, February 27-28. Post-collegian Tigers, such as Cantwell, will advance to the USA Track & Field Indoor Championships to be held in Boston, Mass., February 27-29. Television coverage of the indoor nationals will be held on ESPN2 Saturday and Sunday.
