USOC/Comcast Oly channel next year?

Point I'm trying to make is that we shouldn't get all excited about "new" meets suddenly becoming available. Unlikely there will be many/any camera crews dispatched; if there's already a feed available, perhaps they will pick up on it. But creation of a whole new track-filiming department just ain't gonna happen.

Allow me to suggest that one not get overly excited about this relative to seeing a lot of track. (ignoring NBC's latest complaint, as now aired on the front page)

Track is waaaay expensive to televise. Be prepared for wall-to-wall coverage of things that are easier to cover, which, I'm guessing, means a lot of "obscure" stuff.

Covering a track meet requires a quantum X more bodies than you imagine, I'm guessing.

That is why NBC Universal Sports does have its own camera crew at these meets. They are using the "World TV" feed and doing voiceovers from their NY studios. Alot cheaper that way.

I see that the USOC is trying to launch their Oly channel next year in association with Comcast. The good news is we'd get TripleCast kinda coverage perhaps. The other good news is that my local provider is Comcast. The bad news is: what are the odds?

The bad news it is Comcast. :twisted: They will give it free for 3 months and then it goes to their special packages @ $10 not wait $12 or $13 or $14.99 a month in the next year. :twisted:

comcast national hq is in philly...

why doesn't comcast just co-op universal sports to ALL comcast outlets..

universal sports is in philly...

commie cast as it's know locally probably drops the univrsal sports, as it hates competition of any sort...

hence, the name commie cast...

monopoly is their middle name...

One possibility that immediately comes to mind is extensive coverage of the Penn Relays - beyond the hour or two on ESPN or NBC. I believe Comcast is based in Philadelphia and already has considerable production capabilities in the area for stuff like college basketball.

Regarding track and field, not sure how much of it we will see on the new channel.

NBC has the Olympic rights locked up for many more years as well as rights to the World Champs.

Golden League and GP meets are already locked into NBC Universal Sports until 2015.

Universal Sports also broadcast most "Olympic" type sports. Not sure how much added value this new network will be. We will just have to take a wait and see attitude.

The launch could possibly be delayed if the IOC has its way regarding the use of the world "Olympic" in the network name(see story on front page)
