Could you grovel a little as you say that? Do you mind if I sneer and laugh derisively at your proffered penance. It makes the whole thing so much more . . . satisfying! :P

With all due respect to Jamaica, that's quite the overstatement. "Many" times? Hardly. How many times did a Jamaican rank no. 1 in a sprint event between 1948 and 2000? Off hand I think of Herb McKenley, Don Quarrie, and Merlene Ottey, feel free to list the "many" others.

Reminds me of my kids' current favorite joke: Why couldn't the little boy get in to see the pirate movie?

Because it was rated "R"! (Arrgghh!)

It's not really fair to imply that Jamaicans have suddenly started running well.
Remember, Ottey and Grace Jackson used to come 2nd and 3rd alongside Flo Jo (RIP).
I seem to also remember Sandie Richards, Deon Hemmings, Juliet Cuthbert, Herb McKinley...
Then there are athletes of Jamaican ancestry that represented other countries such as Inger Miller, Donovan Bailey, Linford Christie and the present-day Sanya Richards.

So yeah, it's uncanny, but Jamaica as a long history of producing strong athletes and it isn't a recent phenomenon.
Our runners not infrequently lost to stronger Americans (and the loser isn't often remembered) but if you look back historically you'll find we were there decades back.

Recently we have been winning more than losing so visibility has increased.
A few things might have happened: local tertiary/professional level training has improved and for a while it was no longer as easy for Jamaicans to move to England resulting in more talent staying home.
Bolt and Powell represent real strides as male sprinters representing Jamaica but the women do not yet outclass Merlene Ottey at her best; the Americans are slower right now.

Nonetheless, the complaining Carl Lewis and his rather insipid sister always strike me as lacking in class and graciousness.
The latter's 'commentating' comes off more as thinly veiled cheer-leading rather than useful insight into what is happening track-side and the former was always a sore loser.

I'm with those who say quality sprinting is good for the sport and the current crop of American sprinters are rather agreeable souls (Felix, Gay etc).
I really prefer to minimize the statements of historic achievers who raise controversies not raised by athletes on the track TODAY.

Grace Jackson(who in 88 said after the race, her medal was clean)
                    Julith Cuthbert

some born in Jamaica but rep other countries
                    Ben Johnson
                    Linval Christe
                    Donovan Baliey

                    So let see we had

                    in the 40-50 Herb McKenley
60-70 Don Quarrie and D Johnson
                    from 1980 -- 2000
so many went to US schools and never return the same
R Mighty -- Ato boldon was not in his class
                    K Johnson
                    England

                      .
I was taking the quoted poster literally when he said "the fastest people on earth", and you are entirely correct in pointing out that Jamaica has a rich tradition of top level sprinters which hardly just materialized in the last several years. If anyone lost a deserved no. 1 and Olympic gold, IMHO, it was Grace Jackson.

Relative to Mr. Bolt, Mr. Lewis has no chance of winning a mano y mano sprint 100m long under any conditions. Nevertheless, if Mr. Lewis were to walk the same distance from start to finish, he'd have arrived minutes or imaginably hours before a turtle.

Doesn't the reptile suck? bigger time??
