There were 12 men left in the competition at 5.40, but 2 of them hadn't cleared 5.30 (actually, one of them hadn't cleared any height until that point), so they couldn't end the competition at that point.

Yes, but they continued even after those two had both cleared 5.40. In any case, all remaining jumpers other than Holzdeppe already had a 100% certain spot. Even Michalski could have skipped 5.40 and still remained tied 12th (of course, he still had an incentive to jump in dropping the other guys tying for the last spot).

Lots of interesting results and what's more...a litany of PB's. Great to see

Devetzi has a replacement and she's barely 20 years old:
            PAPAHRÍSTOU, Paraskeví GRE 14.34 PB

            PB's 'r' us in the men's 400m and...Belgium have their 4th guy
1 FONSAT, Yannick FRA 45.68 PB

2 LEVINE, Nigel GBR 45.78 PB

3 CIEPIELA, Jan POL 45.81 PB

4 GILLET, Antoine BEL 46.13 PB (worth a low 45 split)

Ireland's junior sensation and former Lady Vol (spent one year there in 2007) has FINALLY had that breakthrough I have been waiting for:
GALLIGAN, Rose-Anne IRL 4:13.66 Q PB [Top qualifier]

David McCarthy of Providence took Ireland's first medal in the 5k last night.

Artur Noga has some competition in the men's 110m hurdles, again - heavy on the PB's
            1 BASCOU, Dimitri FRA 13.54 Q PB

            2 FRANKIS, Gianni GBR 13.58 Q PB

            3 PRIESTLEY, Callum GBR 13.70 Q

            4 NOGA, Artur POL 13.72 Q

5.30 pole vault PB for Sintnicolaas in the decathlon - would have qualified for specialist final!

Harry could of done with a sub 10.10 in those conditions(he won't get better) and then beat Edgar and Pickering at Crystal Palace, he may of got a ticket to Berlin then.

Or at least, they would have - if Jonathan wasn't injured for the rest of the season...

Just when Belgium looked like having a 4th for their long Relay team I read that Jonathan Borlee, NCAA Champion, is out for the rest of the season.

Strange, cos he is still down to compete in Paris tonight. Mix up with dear brother ???

That ruddy NCAA aint good for all the athletes who want to go places in August. Last w/e the Brit Trials was a good example. Lee Emanuel a shadow of his best in the USA; Bingham the American Brit now crocked and wont do much individually, Chris Gowell in the 1.46s in the States looked rather tired.

The Borlee brothers ran maybe 2-3 races in college and that was suppose to "wear them out" ??? That would hardly be the case!

Obviously this is shocking news but with those distances anything is possible.

I'm not convinced the the Euro unders 23's don't just encourage mediocrity.
