With all due respect to Jamaica, that's quite the overstatement. "Many" times? Hardly. How many times did a Jamaican rank no. 1 in a sprint event between 1948 and 2000? Off hand I think of Herb McKenley, Don Quarrie, and Merlene Ottey, feel free to list the "many" others.[/quote:2mf60ad7]

    100m, men:
    1976: Donald Quarrie
    1989: Raymond Stewart
    2004: Asafa Powell
2006: I couldn't find it listed but I'm pretty sure that Asafa was #1.
    2008: Usain Bolt

    100m, women:
    1989: Merlene Ottey
    1990: Merlene Ottey
    1991: Merlene Ottey
    1996: Merlene Ottey
    2005: Veronica Campbell
2006: Again I could find no listing but something tells me that Sherone Simpson was #1.
    2007: Veronica Campbell
    2008: Shelly Ann Fraser

    200m, men:
    1971: Donald Quarrie
    1975: Donald Quarrie
    1976: Donald Quarrie
    2008: Usain Bolt

    200m, women:
    1989: Merlene Ottey
    1990: Merlene Ottey
    1993: Merlene Ottey
    2004: Veronica Campbell
    2008: Veronica Campbell

    400m, men:
    1947: Herb McKenley
    1948: Herb McKenley
    1950: George Rhoden
    1951: George Rhoden
    1952: George Rhoden
    1982: Bertland Cameron
    1983: Bertland Cameron
    2002: Michael Blackwood

    400m, women:
    1970: Marilyn Neufville

    400mh, women:
    1986: Deon Hemmings
    2008: Melaine Walker

    800m, men:
    1951: Arthur Wint,

Yes, I know the 800m is not a sprint event. Still interesting though as Rhoden was #1 for both the 400m and the 800m in the same year.

I'm just making a list, because I like doing stuff like this. Not trying to debate. If I were to include listings for the top three instead of just the number one spot the lists would be a lot bigger but skiboo was specific in asking a question about those ranked #1. For the fun of it I may do a list that includes athletes ranked in the top three later.

The answer to which would likely end up getting this thread locked also.

what happen to freedom to express.
well, not to address the real issue here, which is the nature of your posts, but the freedom of expression is guaranteed by the US Constitution from placing restrictions on expression by the United States government.

Seeing as how T&FN is not the US Government, um, yes, they do have a right to control what is being said their messageboards.

I thought Merlene was ranked #1 in the 200M in 1990.

Hasn't been updated in a few years, but if you to the Rankings link at the top of this page, you'll find all kinds of analyses of our stuff, including one that's by-nation that will very quickly show you every country (by event) and which people they've had ranked at what level.

If you want to play that game, then Frank Shorter should be listed as Germany, Alberto Salazar as Cuba and Earl Bell as Panama! Oh yeah, and the U.S. reclaims WR holder Carl Kaufmann from Germany!

Just for kicks, I took a look at the men's 100m list:

                          1952: Herb McKenley #3.
                          1961: Dennis Johnson #2.
                          1967: Lennox Miller #3.
                          1968: Lennox Miller #3.
                          1969: Lennox Miller #3.
                          1974: Donald Quarrie #3.
                          1975: Donald Quarrie #2.
                          1976: Donald Quarrie #1.
                          1978: Donald Quarrie #3.
                          1989: Raymond Stewart #1.
                          2004: Asafa Powell #1.
                          2005: Asafa Powell #2.
2006: I couldn't find it listed but I'm pretty sure that Asafa was #1.
                          2007: Asafa Powell #2.
                          2008: Usain Bolt #1. Asafa Powell #2.

We (Jamaica) did pretty well in the 60's, 70's but the 80's and 90's were not so good (no offense to Raymond Stewart as I am a fan). The 2000's have put us back where we were in the 60's and 70's, and then some. So, just for kicks, I took at look at the three Jamaican-born sprinters, Bailey, Johnson and Christie, to see where they may have fit into the picture. As before, top 3 ranking only.

                          1985: Ben Johnson #2.
                          1986: Ben Johnson #1.
                          1987: Ben Johnson #1. Linford Christie #3.
                          1988: Linford Christie #3.
                          1990: Linford Christie #3.
                          1992: Linford Christie #1.
                          1993: Linford Christie #1.
                          1994: Linford Christie #2.
                          1995: Donovan Bailey #1. Linford Christie #2.
                          1996: Donovan Bailey #1.
                          1997: Donovan Bailey #1.

The gaps filled themselves. Purely an academic exercise, but interesting nonetheless, for the men's 100m at least.
