It would have perhaps been better to have started a new topic for Sunday.

Ms. Yevdokimova's run must have been for her life, because she hadn't broken 400 since 2005. Likewise, Ms. Zbrozhek, who ran 400, has found new life at age 31 following another lifetime best this season after a four year spell in outer space without a trace at this distance. I don't know about you, but I think it's great to see these women churn those tyres so quickly with great competition when the last batch deflated on the road to Beijing.

An otherwise good series for Lysenko as well. Next best woman was at 67,84 though. How the Russian depth has fallen...

Mrs. Alyokhina has been on the 8yr life studies plan between Pr's. She found great weather and a huge boost of confidence yesterday to jump her furthest in 6 years --- including her first jumps over 14m in that time. I'd like to see Ms. Pyatykh improve on her 4th placing in Osaka. If Mrs. Alyokhina can improve when it counts, it inspires hope that Ms. Pyatykh can as well.

I should have added that her name is sometimes transliterated as Alekhina.

And that second placer is the daughter of Yuriy Sedykh and Lyudmila Kondratyeva. Her half sister (daughter of Sedykh and Natalya Lisovskaya) is also a hammer thrower and represented France in this year's World Youth.

Oh, OK, so at least she isn't someone I never heard of. Still, that's a PB by half a meter - after 8 years

Until this weekend, it looked like WÅ‚odarczyk, Heidler and Hrasnova were the clear medal favourites for Berlin. But with Menkova throwing 75.28 in Belarus and now this, all sorts of things could happen.
