Canadian Squads for World Cross

Looks like Mondor is doubling. Simon Bairu, who won the Canadian Champs 12K as a Wisconsin frosh, won't run. He was 52nd in Switzerland last year. In fact, I don't see any current U.S. collegians on the roster.

Athletics Canada names 2004 World Cross Country Championships Team

(Ottawa, February 25, 2004) - Athletics Canada is pleased to announce its 34-member team that will be competing at the 32nd IAAF World Cross Country Championships taking place in Brussels, Belgium, March 20-21, 2004.

So is Bourgeois which is kind of interesting because he was a "subjective" pick so to speak-not that I(or most people) don't think that he doesn't belong there. You'll also notice that there are 4 from what is turning into a pretty good distance group in Guelph.

First off all I would consider Hayden a current US collegian. Secondly Bairu declined the invitation, unfortunately Canada only full funds its short course teams with the long course teams having to pay their own way. Thirdly, this year Canada has a mandatory training camp which begins the weekend of NCAA also the weekend of CIS (Canadian University champs) thus you could not run NCs or CIs if you wanted to go to Worlds.

This partially explains the absense of some US collegians as well as top Canadian collegian Eric Gillis who was 3rd at the Canadian Championships and won the fast track invitational at BU this year.

All that being said the Men's short course team has the 5 top ranked Canadians in the 3k plus Bourgios who has consistently been Canada's top steepler and 2nd Canadian finisher at World Cross.

Moulton—You're correct. I forgot Hayden had outdoor eligibility left for 'Nova.

I wasn't criticizing Bairu for not going. Just disappointed. I like it when the young guys mix it up over 12K.

This is one reason why I don't like the 4K. Teams don't fully fund all squads, so they usually just pick the 4K. Not good for the development of (long) distance running in Canada.

On the same token, having two world cross races does give a chance for some canadians to get international experience, the type of experience they use to get at Pan-ams and ever World track before, the COA decided we should only send a dozen athletes to international events.

Which got them a 3rd and 6th.
