  • Wayne Davis II - 13.19 (+1.5) and 13.08w (+2.2)

    At Pan Am Juniors ...

That's an auto HSR and superior to everything except Skeets' 12.9h. 13.08 would have to be called best HS under any conditions.

The 13.19 is also a WJR ... WITH the relatively new Junior 39" hurdles (inferior obviously to Liu Xaing's 13.12 w/42" ... Skeets also ran 13.23 as a Jr w/42")

If you want to be really picky you can deny Davis HSR status. HS hurdles are 39 inches. The Junior ones are only 38.98 inches!

The recognized WJR is—as it should be—Liu's 13.12. To call a shorter hurdle mark better makes no sense at all. Same as those schools who call a 4:10 in the 1600 the school record instead of a 4:08 mile. If you exceed the measure/distance, it doesn't somehow get invalidated.

That would be the same as denying somebody a shot record becuse their ball was too heavy!

Then again, some of us consider the IAAF about as competent
                  and rational as those schools...

I am actually surprised that they got it right.

They didn't get it right at first; it took some prodding from some pains in their ass (no names mentioned).

Yep, 2.0 ... the original 2.2 that I'd heard was flashed incorrectly on a scoreboard at the meet I was told (I'm not there, but heard from NSSF folks covering it).

Unfortunately, USATF is calling it WJR w/o clarification and who knows who else will, too. Interesting, also, that IAAF lists WJR as 13.12, but the only all-time list I've found is the one that has 39"/99 cm marks only.

Of course, Tilastopaja has the 42" list and I don't know who else does. But we knew right away about the difference! I suspect WDII, a pretty exacting kid, is aware as well.

Confusing for a lot of people I'm sure, though. Why did the IAAF switch from 42 to 39 for Jrs anyway?

You can imagine what a pain it is for us at DS, having to distinguish between youth implements, HS implements, and Jr implements ... as well as differing hurdle heights. And why a "Youth" is 16-17 in an World meet, but 13-14 in a USATF meet!

Leads to questions like who holds the most US records in a single event? Why, I think it's Conor McCullough, who know has hammer records for youth (11 lbs+/-), HS (12), Jr (13.2) and Sr (16)!!!

I was just having this discussion with some friends about the height difference. We all pretty much agreed that the American collegiate 110 hurdlers are really at a disadvantage in this event. In addition to the adjustment down from the 42" to the 39" you also have to account for the lack of races available for them to run if any to be equally prepared at this height. Since the switch I wonder if a collegiate has won the event?

I believe Davis ESTABLISHES (not breaks) the World Junior Record for the junior height. This is from the IAAF startlist at last year's World Junior Championships:
