  • Irish National Championships: Aug 1st-2nd

Day one of the Irish Championships kicked off today in Dublin.

Highlights so far include 2007 World Champs 6th placer, Eileen O' Keefe, continues her return from injury with a season's best throw of 69.91m in the Hammer.

Olive Loughnane, who finished 7th in Beijing in the 20k racewalk, set a new PB over 5000m.

21-year-old European Indoor finalist, Kelly Proper, jumped a windy 6.68m in the Long Jump.

David Gillick, who lowered his own 400m NR to 44.77m in Madrid lately, runs in the 200m and qualified for the final taking place tomorrow.

The highlight of the weekend should be the men's 800m, where fierce rivals Thomas Chamney and David Campbell are vying for a spot on the Berlin team. Both have the B standard, having both gone under 1.46 at the Bislett Games in Oslo last month. Chamney, on that occasion, ran just one hundreth of a second outside the A standard. He has run 1.45.x twice since then, missing out on the A standard marginally on both occasions which would've meant both athletes would be going to Berlin. Tomorrow's race is likely to be tactical so the chances of one, or both, achieving the A standard are slim. Both will be doing just enough to beat the other.
