  • Make 5 predictions for WC here

Choose any format you want or follow mine...

I will select 5 athletes who will shine and 5 who will stink..

    Shine-
    1. Bolt- Gimme pick, right? Will anything less than 3 WR's be a disappointment? Answer- yes...... and he won't disappoint.

    2. Meseret Defar- The 5 is all hers.. but the surprise that will elevate her back to the top will be a win in the 10 against an incredible field..

    3. Allyson Felix- Peaking at the right time she will take her turn in the Felix wins WC's/VCB wins Olympics sweepstakes. But her time will be the most impressive. She will go under the non-steroid WR and run a blistering two legs on both relays (though it won't be enough in the 4x100).

    4. Dayron Robles- The Bolt of the hurdles will make another WR look easy.

    5. Shelly Ann Fraser- The new track & field "it" girl will cement her status as the #1 sprinter with another surprise blowout performance similar to Beijing.. Surprise because she melts a supposedly competitive field... But the real surprise will be when she blasts Jam out to a WR in the relay..

    5 who will stink
    1. Carmelita Jeter- In her only big showdown races of the year she was embarrassed. In Rome she was hyperventilating so heavy before the gun I thought her plane was going down. 5th for her and eaten alive in the relay.

    2. Sanya Richards- With pressure mounting for her to win a gold medal, she will again find the rounds too difficult and slip to a disappointing 2nd and a grand helping of the choke label.

    3. Blanka Vlasic- How this underachiever/pretty girl, loaded with unbelievable talent, doesn't have the worl record in this event yet is beyond me. Too much time in the mirror. 3rd with a clunk.

    4. Jeremy Wariner- Unable to compete with Merritt, he will again quit down the stretch as he prepares his post-race excuse-fest. This time he will drop to 3rd.

    5. Ivan Ukhov- The drunk jumper has redeemed himself well with the world lead this year, but the lure of the flask is too great. Beer friendly Berlin will be his demise. 8th and a relapse.

    1. meseret defar wins the 5 and 10k double
    2. lashinda demus sets a world record in the 400 hurdles
3.k. bekele win the 10k and skips the 5k
4.tirunesh dibaba runs only the 10k so her younger sister can run in the 5k.
    5. jamaica AND the usa women both go under germany's long standing 41.37 record in the 4 x 100..

    and the absolute shocker
    6. caster semenya runs 1:52 and breaks the womens world record set over a quarter of a century ago, and track gets a lot of media attention, not for the performance, not for drug allegations, not because of her young age, but as was discussed here last week her appearance. (the hermaphrodite rumor).

I was pondering the possibility of No.4.

      My bold predictions;
      1. Vili and Majewski will throws 21m and 22m respectively.
      2. Demus runs 52.4 in the 400mH and Morosanu and Antyukh improved to low 53s.
      3. Paula will turn up and kick everyone's ass.
      4. Kipsiro to upset Bekele in the 5000m.
      5. 78m in women's hammer.

        1. Schwazer goes 3:33 and gives the impression of coming from a light morning jog afterwards
        2. Kozmus finds his form at the right time again and wins comfortably with 81+
        3. Ryan Brathwaite shocks the world list dominating Americans by stealing a medal
        4. Demus and Walker both go sub-53 in a fight reminiscent of '93 and '95 (not to forget other quality battles in this event such as '83, '99 etc.)
        5. Sweden is officially shocked as just a few years removed from multiple golds they don't get a single top eight position!

Sorry, but if it does turn out that bad (which I doubt), most
of us will have had plenty of forewarning.

Since he was downing vodka w/ Red Bull in Lausanne, I don't think beer's likely to be much of a problem.

I hope Kipsiro plans on running the last 800 in 1:51.

                1. At least silver for one of the Canadian female hurdlers (Priscilla or Perdita)

                2. Sanya finally wins gold in the 400 and runs 48.93.

                3. Jamaica gold in both 4x100's

                4. U.S. is golden in both 4x400's

                5. Gary Reed wins the men's 800M final in sub 1:43 (he'll have to run that fast to defeat a stellar field)

I agree with WR for Demus and Gary Reed wins the 800m.

I have a feeling Gay won't make it through the rounds.

Sanya proves her detractors wrong with a huge win in 400m.

Agree Felix will shine in both relays and the 200m.

The crowd will carry Friedrich to a win over Vlasic.

                  Biggest mystery for me-JELIMO!

                      5. Cantwell - finally hits the big one at the right time (even more WT)
                      Women

                        My predictions are as follows:

                        1. Jeter wins the 100m gold - sets new WC record.
                        2. Felix wins the 200m - also sets new WC record.
                        3. Demus wins 400m H - sets new WR.
                        4. USA womens 4X100m wins gold and breaks AR (possibly sets new WR).
                        5. Gay upsets Bolt in 100m wins gold - sets new WR.

                        * My instinct tells me that Jeter was recovering from a slight injury from the US championship and was advised to run at about 70% without any explosive speed in the early rounds of the European circuit. When folks were saying she was peaking too soon she said she wasn't. She has a VERY experienced coach.

Most people seem to be in Defar's camp, but I wouldn't count Tirunesh out. Without Lornah Kiplagat, the pace may be slow for the first half, then Abeylegesse may take it up. With Elvan, Melkamu and the Kenyans, both should be great races. Can't wait! I leave Thursday!
                              Cheers,
