Who's going to make some bold statements and predict which of the fancied favourites will bottle it on the big stage?

If i had to pick one i think i would go for Vlasic in the W HJ. Just think she can bottle it in the major champs and there is a couple of competitors there ready to pounce if she does.

Sanya (let's start counting how many members agree)

      Vlasic
      Asafa probably won't medal

How about let's start counting the number of members who disagree.

        I disagree.

Actually, given the climate around here, Sanya's and Vlasic's success (which I do predict) is the upset. Sadly, Asafa won't suprise us (IMO, but it would be cool if he did).

          Faves who won't fulfill expectations:
Although LM and JW will have a good battle, neither will break 44.
The 800 faves, WHOEVER they are, won't win (as noted above)
          The Marathon faves, " " "
Lord only knows who will win the m400H
          Ditto the mHJ and TJ

I see Isi struggling to win, but just will

One of the USA or Jamaican 4x1s (or all!) will drop the baton!! **Gasp!**

I don't want her to but I think Sanya will lose by at least one-tenth (tightening up while a streaking Ohoruogu "goes Osaka" on the field).

Vlasic has not looked 2008 this year - Ariane may take her out.

If Stewart is the favorite for the Women's 100m, I think she will be beaten by...someone else.

                I too disagree.

                Ukhov won't win.

If you consider Vlasic a favorite for her event, you need to declare Friedrich the same. Just like last year at the Olympics, 2.05m or even better might not be enough to win gold. This is also why I think it's unfair to consider Vlasic a choker, she is the defending champion and delivered one of the best performances in Beijing, there was someone else who needed less attempts. Compared to other gold medal winning performances though, this was absolutely worthy of the first place.

There are only few events this year that feature clear-cut favorites:

                  - Bolt, Kanter and Robles on the men's side
                  - Isinbaeva, Savigne, maybe Demus

That's it for me, a very short list of athletes I absolutely expect to win. Of course there are events where people are slightly favored and should end up winning too, but most competitions are wide open this year.

Vlašic not remotely a favorite; that's Friedrich's claim, pure and simple.

Any 100m sprinter or high hurdler both m or w is always vulnerable because of possibility of bad start.

Have to disagree. I think Sanya and Kiprop are sure things.

It'd also be hard to bet against Bek in 10K.

If Tiru is out then Defar is another and I think both the 5k and 10k.

Nope. Since there are no "favorites," merely top dogs.
