and the US has three girls all with season throws over 70m, while the Russians have one. World gets weirder every day.

A comp without Yipsi Moreno just seems wrong...

I hope for a new WR.

Wenxiu Zhang has been laying low all year, but the way the entire Chinese team is performing here, she could be a major factor. She medalled at the last two majors, so she'll want to keep the series going.

72.00 is a pretty tough automatic qualifying mark. It may be a pretty routine distance for the world's top 5, but all the others will struggle to get it.

What would you expect from the two-time reigning Prefontaine Classic champion?! :-)

Menkova is struggling in qualifying once again. Foul in round one, and a very short one at that.

WÅ‚odarczyk qualified easily with 74.54, and Jessica Cosby set a PB 72.21 to qualify as well. American throwers are really doing well in this meet.

Another poor throw for Menkova. 67.47 isn't going to make it, and she's got just one throw left.

Menkova 69.58. That might get her through, but she's not in a safe position. Currently in 5th place in group A.

5th in group is "usually" good enough to move on. I'd be surprised if more than one more in the group passed her at this point.

Of course, Menkova was in a very similar situation in Beijing. In qualifying, she had two very poor throws, followed by one that just got her through in 11th place. And she went on to win gold. For whatever reason, she just never throws well in preliminaries.

and didn't she foul her first two in the final also?
